The Visitation

The second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary

• Have you ever looked closely at the plaque depicting the Visitation that stands on Apparition Hill in Medjugorje? There is much to see and observe in Carmelo Puzzolo’s sculptured bronze which presents a very lively image of St Luke’s gospel account – and much more! Here is what St Luke has to say about Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth.

Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, “Of all women you are most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

And Mary said:
My soul proclaims the greatness of he Lord
and my spirit exults in God my Saviour;
because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid.
Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed,
for the Almighty has done great things for me.
Holy is his name,
and his mercy reaches from age to age, for those who fear him.
He has shown the power of his arm,
he has routed the proud of heart.
He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away.
He has come to the help of Israel. his servant, mindful of his mercy
– according to the promise he made to our ancestors –
of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.

Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then went back home. (Luke 1 : 39-58)

The significant difference between St Luke’s account and Puzzolo’s depiction is where Mary and Elizabeth meet. In the Gospel account Mary enters the house to greet Elizabeth. But the Puzzolo presentation shows the meeting outside and this allows the artist to enhance the scene as if to encourage further contemplation.

Zechariah
In St Luke’s Visitation account, Zechariah is mentioned only as the house holder. Remember that in his role as priest, Zechariah was left dumb when he questioned the message that the Angel Gabriel gave him, that his wife Elizabeth would give birth to a son, John. In the Puzzolo illustration Zechariah is shown present at the moment of greeting between his wife and Mary, but notice his demeanour as he stands in the doorway. His mouth is shut tight, almost zipped, as if to represent his inability to speak. He is hesitant. His one hand grips the door frame, a need to hold on to something solid and structured. There is no desire to step out of his house. He does not wish to cross the threshold. He is not extending any greeting. He seems uncertain as he fixes his gaze directly at Mary. Unlike Elizabeth, he has yet to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Elizabeth
In contrast, Elizabeth has crossed the threshold, has stepped out in faith and as she kneels before her cousin Mary, the tabernacle, she is filled with the Holy Spirit. She gives her hand, her heart, to Mary and Jesus while her other hand feels the child in her womb leap for joy. Behind her, the door that represents the gateway to her heart, is wide open.

Mary
See how Mary, her ‘bump’ showing, is placed two steps above Elizabeth, but not above Zechariah, the priest! See how Mary uses both her hands to clasp the offered hand of Elizabeth. Now follow the direction to Mary’s face and see the clasp that holds her veil. Clasps are designed to hold, to join, to keep together.

The Fig Tree
Behind Mary is the prominent and twisting trunk of the fig tree, its leaves and branches forming a canopy above. This fruit bearing tree is a reminder of Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary when she says: “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” It also echoes the passage in St John’s Gospel which tells of Nathaniel’s response to the news when Simon, Peter and Philip had discovered the Messiah: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Later when Nathaniel asked, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathaniel responded with utter faith and belief saying, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are the King of Israel.” Now we see Mary under the fig tree and Elizabeth responding with similar conviction: “Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?” In contrast, on the left side of the plaque, Zechariah is not so forthcoming and is uncertain in his faith.

The Cat
Positioned at the base of the fig tree is a cat, its ribs suggesting that it is not well-fed and unlikely to be domesticated. But nevertheless it has a purpose in this scene – to catch the mice that feed of the bark of the fig tree. Momentarily, it seems distracted from its role as mouse-catcher, perhaps by Mary’s toes peeping through her sandals!

Remembering Medjugorje... 2

THE WAY OF THE LORD...

I remember one occasion in Medjugojre, when the pilgrimage group I had joined was blessed with a talk given by a local Franciscan priest. After the talk he invited questions from the pilgrims.

One woman asked the Franciscan, “Father, what do you think about Hell?” The smiling priest replied, “I never think about it. I focus on the direction I want to head for.”

Pope speaks of Marian devotion...

Today, Pope Benedict XVI welcomed members of the Sodality of Our Lady, from Regensburg, in this Marian month of May. In his address the Holy Father reminisced about his childhood studies at the seminary of Traunstein St Michael in Germany where, at the age of 14, he was admitted to this association. The Pope spoke about his own devotion to the Blessed Mother and how the Sodality’s programme stressing sanctification and special devotion is still very relevant today. The Holy Father went on to say that Marian devotion has paid a key role in church life for centuries because she shows us her Son, Jesus Christ. In his concluding comments Pope Benedict expressed the hope that this association's fervent devotion to Our Lady would strengthen and encourage a personal involvement in building the Kingdom of God. Our Lady’s May message given to Marija

THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY
Dear children! My prayer today is for all of you who seek the grace of conversion. You knock on the door of my heart, but without hope and prayer, in sin, and without the Sacrament of Reconciliation with God. Leave sin and decide, little children, for holiness. Only in this way can I help you, hear your prayers and seek intercession before the Most High. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, May 25, 2011

Remembering Medjugorje... 1

NO MASKS IN HEAVEN…

One of the wonders of a pilgrimage to Medjugorje is to discover how quickly we discard the many masks we choose to don in life and hide behind. For first-timers this process may take a few days to happen; but most returning pilgrims seldom have need to masquerade anymore. Their hearts have already been exposed on previous visits having received the revealing light of knowledge that they are truly loved by God. They are not ashamed to be naked in front of each other. Everything is as God intended. What need is there for masks in heaven?

Hearts of all conditions, shapes and sizes are clearly visible and on display in Medjugorje, and even more prominently the hearts hiding their nakedness behind revealing fig-leaf masks.

First-time pilgrims arrive in Medjugorje for a number of different reasons. Often these reasons serve as a mask to disguise the real need to discover and meet with God in our lives. Whatever the pretence, whatever the colour and pattern of the mask, God does not disappoint. Rather, he surprises! We discover him in the most unexpected ways and places, especially in Medjugorje.

Of course there are places to hide in Medjugorje but God calls out: “Where are you” (as if he didn’t know already, but is asking only for us to acknowledge him and respond to his call). In Medjugorje, we find ourselves responding to God’s call big-time! We learn there is no longer a need to hide and be fearful because when God’s call comes, it is a loving call, not a call of condemnation or threat. It is the call of the Father. The Loving Father reveals himself to us. He does not allow the world to place him behind a mask, to disguise or hide him, to distort him in a way that the serpent desires to present. Our Father is a God of revelation. He is with us. He refuses to hide from his children. Seek and you shall find.

I experience a great and simple pleasure each time I visit Medjugorje. I always make a point of trying to be late for breakfast on the first morning. That way, when I leave my room to head down the tile-floored stairs, I can hear the wonderful and joyous sound of chattering and excited voices echoing from the breakfast room up the stairwell. And when I enter the dining room it’s like entering a classroom of young, happy children. There isn’t the silence broken only by scraping knives and forks on plates as one would hear in a normal hotel breakfast room. Already the masks are beginning to be discarded. Hearts are opening up to each other, and as the week progresses the communal sharing, excitement and joy at meal times continues, even after the most tiring of days.

I wore a mask, many in fact, for about four days on my first pilgrimage. On the fifth day I even used the cover of darkness as a mask. In fact, at the time of tears I was so grateful that no one could see me weeping that night at the Blue Cross. How naive I was to believe that darkness would protect me from others knowing that God had entered my life in such a special way at that moment, or even thinking that God shut shop when darkness descended. Such was my ignorance at that time, still trying to hide. There was no longer to be a hiding place for me. From the moment I was conscious of the wonderful gift of God’s love and understanding which immediately flowed into my heart and soul after the tearful awareness of my sinful nature, I have seldom felt the need to want to hide or mask myself anymore, certainly not to hide from God who knows me better than I know myself and daily teaches and reveals to me more about his never-ending love.

Now I know and accept that I cannot “hide” any more. I searched for the love of God for much of my life but without really knowing what I was searching for. I thank God for the souls and witnesses that led me to Medjugorje, a grace-filled garden where God walks and reveals himself to all who masquerade.

The home of the Lord

Jesus said to his disciples:
Make your home in me as I make mine in you.

John 15 : 4

Dear children! On this message, which I give you today through my servant, I desire for you to reflect a long time. My children, great is the love of God. Do not close your eyes, do not close your ears, while I repeat to you: Great is his love! Hear my call and my supplication, which I direct to you. Consecrate your heart and make in it the home of the Lord. May he dwell in it forever. My eyes and my heart will be here, even when I will no longer appear. Act in everything as I ask you and lead you to the Lord. Do not reject from yourself the name of God, that you may not be rejected. Accept my messages that you may be accepted. Decide, my children, it is the time of decision. Be of just and innocent heart that I may lead you to your Father, for this that I am here, is his great love. Thank you for being here!
Medjugorje message, March 18, 1996

In this message to the visionary Mirjana 15 years ago Our Lady makes nine requests.

1: I desire for you to reflect on this message for a long time.

2: Do not close your eyes and ears while I repeat: Great is the love of God.

3: Hear my call and my supplication.

4: Consecrate your heart and make it the home of the Lord.

5: Act in everything I ask you.

6: Do not reject the name of God.

7: Accept my messages.

8: Decide, my children.

9: Be of just and innocent heart.

The great feast of Pentecost is celebrated on June 12. The Mother of Jesus and the other disciples prepared for the coming of the Holy Spirit by gathering in the Upper Room and praying for nine days. This year I intend to use the basis of this message of Our Lady as a novena in preparation for Pentecost, reflecting on a different request each day for nine days. Care to join me?

Reverence the Lord Christ in your hearts. 1 Peter : 15

The gift of peace...

Jesus said to his disciples, “Peace I bequeath you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. John 14 : 27

Dear children! I call you, little children, to pray without ceasing. If you pray, you are closer to God and he will lead you on the way of peace and salvation. That is why I call you today to give peace to others. Only in God is there true peace. Open your hearts and become those who give a gift of peace and others will discover peace in you and through you and in this way you will witness God’s peace and love which he gives you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, January 25, 2000

Words from heaven...

If anyone loves me he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home in him. Those who do not love me do not keep my words. And my word is not my own: it is the word of the one who sent me. I have said these things to you while still with you; but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. John 14 : 21-26

Dear children! Today I pray for you and with you that the Holy Spirit may help you and increase your faith, so that you may accept even more the messages that I am giving you here in this holy place. Little children, comprehend that this is a time of grace for each of you; and with me, little children, you are secure. I desire to lead you all on the way of holiness. Live my messages and put into life every word that I am giving you. May they be precious to you because they come from heaven. Thank you for having responded to my call.  Medjugorje message, June 25,2002

Mostar airport targets Italian pilgrims

Mostar Airport has announced it is finalising an agreement with B&H Airlines to commence seasonal summer charters from the city to Pescara in Italy. Mostar Airport’s managment is visiting Pescara in order to finalise the flight details. The project is being propped by a local tour operator. This is welcomed news for the airport as it has been struggling to attract airlines for years. If all goes to plan flights could commence next month, local media reports. In April, Mostar handled 2.193 passengers thanks to charter flights from Italy and Lebanon. It is believed Mostar Airport could attract airlines offering flights to religious pilgrims visiting the nearby Medjugorje. (Balkans.com)

Question that needs to be asked is just why Mostar Airport has been struggling to attract commercial airlines for years. Is it up to scratch on safety standards for this type of traffic?

Cardinal Schönborn: Medjugorje messages an alphabet for Christian living

Cardinal Schönborn with Medjugorje visionaries, Marija, Ivanka and Mirjana.

• Earlier this month Cardinal Christoph Schönborn was interviewed on Radio “Mir” Medjugorje and spoke warmly about his private visit to Medjugorje during Christmas and New Year 2009/10.

The Cardinal stated that his decision to go to Medjugorje came about as a result of visiting the “mother house” of the Cenacolo Community in Saluzzo, Italy, for its annual “Festival of Life” in the summer of 2009. He said he was aware of the deep connection between Medjugorje and the Cenacolo Community and how the Community has spread to the entire world and gives active and visible witness to the power of the resurrection of the Lord. He said he also wanted to use his time in Medjugorje for silence and meditation.

When asked what he particularly remembered about his pilgrimage the cardinal said he remembered in a special way the celebration of the Eucharist at the midnight vigil Mass (New Year’s Eve) with many thousands of pilgrims present. He also remembered with gratitude his meeting with the Franciscan priests and, as a Dominican, he felt a strong association with the Franciscans.

Climbing the two hills in Medjugorje was another special memory of the cardinal. He revealed that he ascended Cross Mountain with Sr Elvira, founder of the Cenacolo Community, and it had been a special and strong experience.

Cardinal Schönborn said the memories of his meetings with four of the visionaries, Marija, Mirjana, Ivanka and Vicka are carved deep in his heart and he is full of gratitude for the outstanding hospitality in their homes.

The cardinal also revealed he spent time on pilgrimage as a priest hearing confessions and added that the “secret” of Medjugorje, like Lourdes, is the close proximity of Our Lady, and is reason why pilgrims come.

He said his first encounter with Medjugorje was in the early 80’s through a prayer group based in a Vienna church and he observed how people were living and praying in a special way for hours every week, praying the Rosary with their heart, coming before the Blessed Sacrament, and celebrating the Eucharist. He saw the group’s willingness and commitment as a sign that speaks of truth. Cardinal Schönborn then spoke of the many prayer groups formed in Austria through Medjugorje, how the people in the groups have deepened their faith and Christian life, infused with the Eucharist, and give witness and testimonies of healings. He added that 12 years ago the Church acknowledged and recommended “Oase des Friendens”, an association that monitors and supports Medjugorje prayer groups in Austria.

The cardinal was asked if he could say anything about the “fruits” in his country and responded that the “fruits” were baskets of Medjugorje fruits. He mentioned there were strong priestly vocations stemming from the Medjugorje fruits, many conversions, families strengthened in faith, recovery from addictions…

Cardinal Schönborn then discussed the Medjugorje messages and thanked God that they were not “original”. He said that if they were sensational all would have surely disappeared because it is impossible for each week, each month, every year, to give sensational messages. On a personal basis he regarded the messages as simple and almost like an alphabet for living as a Christian: a continuing call to prayer, to conversion, to reconciliation and to peace, acknowledged by Our Lady’s words “Thank you for responding to my call”.

The cardinal said millions of people around the world read the messages and recognise the call of the Mother of God in their lives because of the messages; they are reminded every month to pray, to reconcile and to love the Virgin Mary. He added that through this “school” Mary invites us to follow Jesus, to look at her Son, to listen to him, to imitate him, and that “Do whatever he tells you” were Mary’s first words to the people. He stressed that “Do whatever he tells you” is the core of the Medjugorje messages.

Cardinal Schönborn was then asked if he could give a special message to the parishioners of Medjugorje and the people of BiH and Croatia. He responded by saying how striking it was that at the beginning (of the apparitions) Our Lady’s messages were directed to the people of the parish and it seemed that if Heaven was preparing Medjugorje for something special then its residents must be involved. He said it would be difficult for the peace of Medjugorje to spread if the residents did not live this peace and that this “education” by  Our Lady was truly wonderful for the parish, to become a “tool” for the Queen of Peace.

The cardinal then mentioned there would be a Prayer Meeting for Peace in the Vienna this coming Novemember, the fourth time such a gathering will take place in the Cathedral, and confirmed that some of the Medjugorje visionaries will participate and he has approved the meeting. He said the Cathedral can be regarded as the heart of Austria and this great movement of prayer within the country that has brought many blessings must have a place in the Cathedral, and gratitude should be expressed that this encounter can take place there.

Cardinal Schönborn concluded the interview by expressing his thanks to all engaged in this type of work. He thanked the Medjugorje parish, the Franciscans in Medjugorje, and said that all are in his heart and prayers with great joy and gratitude.

Virgin of Civitavecchia statue made by Muslim

According to the former Medjugorje parish priest, Fr Jozo Zovko, the famed statue of the Virgin of Civitavecchia in Italy which was brought from Medjugorje, was manufactured by a Muslim.

In a written statement made in 2005, Fr Jozo wrote: “…a statue that is crying tears of blood in Italy was made by a Muslim, and the word Medjugorje is written on it. To this day the same Muslim man is manufacturing statues.”

This week Romereports.com stated that Pope John Paul venerated the image of the Virgin of Civitavecchia, according to a recently published book “La Madonna de Civitavecchia” written by Monsignor Girolama Grillo.

This is not surprising, for in 1995, and after six months of scientific investigations, Pope John Paul instructed Bishop Girolamo Grillo for the statue to be exposed for veneration by the faithful.

PRESENT POPE ALSO PRAYED BEFORE
OUR LADY OF MEDJUGORJE IMAGE

In July 2007 Radio Vatican reported that Pope Benedict XVI also prayed before an image of Our Lady of Medjugorje when staying in Lorenzago di Cadore. The report stated that the Holy Father spent an hour in front of the image and that it was a very poignant time.

The report continued: “The Pope went to the small chapel in the forest and prayed in front of the image of Our Lady of Medjugorje. An interesting story is connected with this image: it was brought in the 80’s and was stolen. After some time, the thief brought it back to the small chapel. The Pope prayed the Rosary and spent about one hour there.”

MEDJUGORJE’S ‘YELLOW HALL’ NOW
DEDICATED TO BLESSED JOHN PAUL II

• The landmark “yellow hall” in Medjugorje, where many meetings take place between pilgrims and the Franciscan priests, was officially renamed earlier this month on May 1, Blessed John Paul II Parish Hall, to honour his beatification on the same day.

Mother of the Risen One

* copyright images: bernard gallagher

At the end of this solemn Eucharistic Celebration, we turn our gaze to Mary, Regina Caeli. With the dawn of Easter she became the Mother of the Risen One and her union with him is so profound that there where the Son is present, the Mother cannot fail to be present. In these beautiful surroundings, gifts and signs of the beauty of God, how many shrines, churches and chapels are dedicated to Mary! In her the luminous face of Christ is reflected. If we follow her with docility, the Virgin will lead us to him. Pope Benedict XVI, May 8, 2011

Dear children! Anew I call you to follow me with joy. I desire to lead all of you to my Son, your Savior. You are not aware that without Him you do not have joy and peace, nor a future or eternal life. Therefore, little children, make good use of this time of joyful prayer and surrender. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, July 25, 2010

A sign from of God

Gamaliel addressed the Sanhedrin.... “If this enterprise, this movement of theirs, is of human origin it will break up of its own accord; but if it does in fact come from God you will not only be unable to destroy them, but you might find yourselves fighting against God.” Acts 5 : 35-42

...By your daily life, little children, you will become an example and witness that you live for Jesus or against him and his will. Little children, I desire that you become apostles of love. By loving, little children, it will be recognised that you are mine. Thank you for having responded to my call.
part Medjugorje message, March 25, 1998

• The 30th anniversary of the Medjugorje phenomenon will be celebrated on June 25. To date, the movement in support of the phenomenon has not broken up on its own accord, but grows increasingly.

He comes not to condemn but to save...

Jesus said to Nicodemus... “For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world but so that through him the world might be saved. John 3 : 17... Gospel for the second week of Easter, Wednesday, May 4.

Two days ago Our Lady began her message to Mirjana with the following words: “Dear children, God the Father is sending me to show you the way of salvation, because he, my children, desires to save you and not to condemn you.” part message, Monday May 2, 2011

United... in heart and soul

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was in common. Acts 4 : 32

Dear children, With a motherly heart, today I desire to remind you of, namely, to draw your attention to, God’s immeasurable love and the patience which ensues from it. Your Father is sending me and is waiting. He is waiting for your open hearts to be ready for his works. He is waiting for your hearts to be united in Christian love and mercy in the spirit of my Son. Do not lose time, children, because you are not its masters. Thank you. Medjugorje message, February 2, 2009

May message of Our Lady to Mirjana

Dear children, God the Father is sending me to show you the way of salvation, because he, my children, desires to save you and not to condemn you. That is why I, as a mother, am gathering you around me, because with my motherly love I desire to help you to be free of the dirtiness of the past and to begin to live anew and differently. I am calling you to resurrect in my Son. Along with confession of sins, renounce everything that has distanced you from my Son and that has made your life empty and unsuccessful. Say “yes” to the Father with the heart and set out on the way of salvation to which he is calling you through the Holy Spirit. Thank you. I am especially praying for the shepherds, for God to help them to be alongside you with a fullness of heart.  Medjugorje message, May 2, 2011

• In this world of ever-increasing condemnation and blame, it is good to know that our Father in Heaven is not pointing the finger to condemn his children, and that his desire is only for our salvation and resurrection to new life.

Of course, the world will always attempt to present a different perspective on life and any call of the Holy Spirit to set out on the way of salvation. For salvation means incorporating forgiveness into our lives, to grow in faith, hope and love, to walk the same path as Jesus, to listen to him and follow. Forgiveness does not always come easy. It can be easier to blame and condemn.

But we see from this message that it is not the Father’s will to condemn his children, and through the prayer taught to us by Jesus, we also know that our peace and fulfillment on earth comes only when we are in harmony with the will of the Father.

Finding the strength in our heart to forgive others is not possible by ourselves, by our own power, and it can become even harder when we seek out the glittering but false crown of power that the world tempts each of us to grasp. Success in the eyes of the world does not always bring the peace our heart desires.

Our strength to forgive can only come through the grace of God and our readiness to renounce everything that keeps us at a distance from receiving this grace. Success in this life can only be our daily “yes” to the Father, not with our lips but with our heart.

• Jesus asked: “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He went and said to the first, ‘My boy, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not go,’ but afterwards thought better of it and went. The man then went and said the same thing to the second who answered, ‘Certainly, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the father’s will?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “In truth I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you, showing the way of uprightness, but you did not believe him, and yet the tax collectors and prostitutes did. Even after seeing that, you refused to think better of it and believe in him.” Matthew 21 : 28-32

“In his mercy, he sends me...”

Invoke the Father, he is waiting for you. Come back to him. I am with you because he, in his mercy, sends me. part Medjugorje message, November 2, 2009

“When you look at a place like Medjugorje, you can see a superpower of mercy. Many merciful deeds were born here or they were supported here.” Cardinal Christoph Schonborn, December 30, 2009, Medjugorje

Dear children, do not be of a hard heart towards the mercy of God, which has been pouring out upon you for so much of your time. In this special time of prayer, permit me to transform your hearts that you may help me to have my Son resurrect in all hearts, and that my heart may triumph. Thank you. May 2, 2007

Dear children! Today I call you to love and mercy. Give love to each other as your Father gives it to you. Be merciful – with the heart. Do good works, not permitting them to wait for you too long. Every mercy that comes from the heart brings you closer to my Son. Medjugorje message given to Mirjana, March 18, 2001

Dear children, do not be of a hard heart towards the mercy of God, which has been pouring out upon you for so much of your time. In this special time of prayer, permit me to transform your hearts that you may help me to have my Son resurrect in all hearts, and that my heart may triumph. Thank you. April 2, 2007
