State “secrets” revealed in new Medjugorje book
A new book about Medjugorje is published this week to coincide with the upcoming 30th anniversary of the phenomenon. Mystery of Medjugorje is published by the Croatian media group Vecernji list and reveals secret documentation showing how the Yugoslav State Security Service (SDB) attempted to suppress the phenomenon in an operation known as “choking Medjugorje” (codename black soil), and compromise some of the protaganists including the parish priest Fr Jozo Zovko (codename Lujo), as well as Fr Tomislav Vlasic (codename Otto) and even the diocesan bishop of the time, Msgr Pavao Zanic (codename Pius).
Mystery of Medjugorje also examines why the phenomenon still survives after 30 years of ecclesiastical suspicion and denial, fierce assaults by a communist regime, critical examination by foreign and domestic media, and much scientific and medical tests.
The book also contains an exclusive interview with the Vienna cardinal, Christoph Schönborn, who speaks about the work of the Vatican Commission currently investigating the Medjugorje phenomenon.
