Decide and be resolute...
• Considering quitting smoking, consuming less alcohol, dieting, or any of the many resolutions that top the lists at this time of year? New Year Resolutions – promises made to be broken, as someone once said. But just why is it that it seems practically the whole world gives some thought to changing the way they live when January 1 comes around? It’s encouraging that there is this deeep-rooted desire to change, to improve, in the hearts of all. Can it be a coincidence that this desire surfaces shortly after the birth of Jesus into the world?
In her December message through the visionary Marija, Our Lady calls us to be carriers of peace in this peaceless world. On another occasion (February 25, 1990), Our Lady said: In this season I especially want you to renounce all the things to which you are attached but are hurting your spiritual life. Therefore, little children, decide completely for God...
That’s what resolutions are – decisions. So here’s a short list of resolutions presented by Our Lady over the many years she has been giving her messages. Most are variations on her original message given to the world on the third day of the Medjugorje apparitions:
Peace, Peace, Peace! Be reconciled. Only Peace. Reconcile yourselves with God and each other. June 26, 1981
Decide for God. August 2, 1992
...decide for love so that you will burn out of love, and daily experience God’s love. November 20, 1986
My dear children, today I want to call each one of you to decide for Paradise. October 25, 1987
I call you to begin to change your life from the beginning and that you decide for conversion, not with words but with life. October 25, 1992
I wish that each of you decide for a change of life... February 25, 1993
You talk and talk but do not pray. Therefore, little children, decide for prayer. December 25, 1993
Today I invite you to decide for peace. January 25, 1996
Little children, I invite you to open yourselves and decide for conversion. June 25, 1996
Today I invite you to decide every day for God. June 25, 1996
...convert and start to live my messages, not with your words but with your life. In this way, little children, you will have the strength to decide for the true conversion of the heart. September 25, 1998
May your conversion and decision for holiness begin today and not tomorrow... dear children, be mine and decide with me for holiness. November 25, 1998
Dear children, at this time, while you are still looking back to the past year, I call you, little children, to look deeply into your heart and to decide to be closer to God and to prayer. January 25, 2002

Growing normally...
Meanwhile the child grew to maturity, and he was filled with wisdom; and God’s favour was with him. Luke 2 : 40
Dear children! I desire to call you to grow in love. A flower is not able to grow normally without water. So also you, dear children, are not able to grow without God's blessing. From day to day you need to seek his blessing so you will grow normally and perform all your actions in union with God. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, April 10, 1986
There was a prophetess also, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well on in years. Her days of girlhood over, she had been married seven years before becoming a widow. She was now eighty-four years old and never left the Temple, serving God night and day with fasting and prayer.
She came by just at that moment and began to praise God; and she spoke of the child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. Luke 2 : 36-38
Dear children! May this time be a time of personal prayer for you, so that the seed of faith may grow in your hearts; and may it grow into a joyful witness to others. I am with you and I desire to inspire you all: grow and rejoice in the Lord who has created you.
Thank you for having responded to my call.

Medjugorje... house of bread
Now when the angels had gone from them into heaven, he shepherds said to one another, “Let us go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manager. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at wheat the shepherds had to say. As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; it was exactly as they had been told.
Luke 2 : 15-20
Medjugorje message, December 12, 1985
Many shepherds have gone to Medjugorje and returned home glorifying and praising God for all they have seen and heard.
Many are the angels who bring the Good News of Medjugorje to shepherds and the world.
Many are the ‘mothers’ and ‘fathers’ who allow Jesus to become incarnate at Medjugorje and ponder the joy and peace alive in their heart.
Medjugorje... a ‘house of bread’ to nourish the world. Bethlehem.
A light for all eyes...
Now in Jerusalem there was a man called Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel’s comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, he took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said: “Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, just as you promised; because my eyes have seen the salvation which you prepared for all the nations to see, a light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of your people Israel.
Luke 2 : 25-32
Dear children; Today I call you to a humble, my children, humble devotion. Your hearts need to be just. May your crosses be your means in the battle against the sins of the present time. May your weapon be patience and boundless love – a love that knows to wait and which will make you capable of recognising God’s signs – that your life, by humble love, may show the truth to all those who seek it in the darkness of lies. My children, my apostles, help me to open the paths to my Son. Once again I call you to pray for your shepherds. Alongside them, I will triumph. Thank you.
Medjugorje message, October 2, 2010
Dear children, My coming to you, my children, is God’s love. God is sending me to warn you and to show you the right way. Do not shut your eyes before the truth, my children. Your time is a short time. Do not permit delusions to begin to rule over you. The way on which I desire to lead you is the way of peace and love. This is the way which leads to my Son, your God. Give me your hearts that I may put my Son in them and make my apostles of you – apostles of peace and love. Thank you! Medjugorje message, November 2, 2006

Our Lady’s annual apparition to Jakov
At the last daily apparition to Jakov Colo on September 12th, 1998, Our Lady told him that henceforth he would have one apparition a year, every Christmas Day. This is also how it was this year. The apparition began at 2:25pm and lasted seven minutes. Jakov said: “Our Lady spoke to me about the secrets and at the end said: ‘Pray, pray, pray.’
Immanuel... our God is with us!
“The Lord is here. From this moment, God is truly God with us. No longer is he the distant God who can in some way be perceived from afar, in creation and in our own consciousness. He has entered the world. He is close to us.” Pope Benedict XVI.

The tender mercy of our God… will bring the rising Sun to visit us, to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet in the way of peace. Luke 1 : 78-79
Dear children! Today I call you, through prayer, to open yourselves to God as a flower opens itself to the rays of the morning sun. Little children, do not be afraid. I am with you and I intercede before God for each of you so that your heart receives the gift of conversion. Only in this way, little children, will you comprehend the importance of grace in these times and God will become nearer to you. Thank you for having responded to my call. God is merciful...
Zechariah asked for a writing-tablet and wrote: “His name is John”. And they were all astonished. At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God. Luke 1 : 63-64
• The meaning of the name John is: “God-is-merciful”. It was John who proclaimed the coming of God’s mercy into the world, and preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
It was the angel Gabriel who instructed Zechariah to name his son John (Yehochanan), and it was Gabriel who instructed Mary to name her son Jesus, (Emmanuel, meaning God-is-with-us ); both names sent from heaven, to accompany the ‘surprising’ births gifted by God.
Zechariah literally couldn’t believe the good news given to him by Gabriel and was silenced because of his lack of faith. Mary accepted the good news and believed that “nothing is impossible to God”. When Zechariah eventually wrote down the words “God is merciful”, his tongue was released and he praised God. When we are released through God’s mercy from all that binds us, do we not give praise also?
Thank God for the name John for it is a message in itself, reminding us of God’s mercy spread by name throughout the world!
You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him... to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of sins; this by the tender mercy of God... Luke 1 : 76-78
Dear children! In this time of grace, when God has permitted me to be with you, little children, I call you anew to conversion. Work on the salvation of the world in a special way while I am with you. God is merciful and gives special graces, therefore, seek them through prayer. I am with you and do not leave you alone. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, May 25, 2010

Sight restored at Medjugorje
On October 16, 2010, a party of 46 pilgrims from Switzerland gathered to board a bus to Medjugorje. Among the travellers was a blind woman Joëlle and her 12-year-old daughter Vinciane. They were accompanied by Claudia, a family friend.
The journey to Medjugorje did not go well. It took two days for the group to arrive at a border crossing into Bosnia Herzegovina only to discover that the Swiss bus did not have the correct documents to travel into the country. The bus and the group moved on and tried another border crossing, but was met with the same decision by officials. The bus was not allowed to drive into Bosnia Herzegovina.
Fortunately, at the second crossing it was noticed that there was a local bus service operating a route to Medjugorje. So the party unloaded its luggage from the Swiss bus and waited at the stand for the next bus to arrive that would take them to Medjugorje. They finally reached the village that evening at 8.00pm.
The next day the group climbed Apparition Hill, including the blind woman Joëlle. It wasn’t an easy climb in the rain, but there was a great spirit of solidarity. Later in the evening, the group gathered again and attended the evening prayer programme at St James’ church. Joëlle became strangely unsettled after receiving the Eucharist at Mass but was put at ease by the pastor accompanying the Swiss group.
The following day, most of the group climbed Mt Krizevac, but for Joëlle and a few others, including the pastor, they prayed instead at the Way of the Cross that surrounds the statue of the Risen Christ. The main group on Krizevac prayed earnestly for the needs of Joëlle, and in the hope that she might recover her sight. Six hours later they came off the mountain in time to attend evening Mass at St James.
It was during this Mass that something remarkable happened. At the distribution of the Eucharist Joëlle raised her head and saw in front of her a priest wearing a white alb. She looked up and was able to see the lights in the church, its high ceiling and windows. The shock to Joëlle was so great that she started to feel unwell again and asked her friend to take her outside. When Joëlle made her exit she turned to Claudia and said, “I see the light!”
They continued walking around the outside of the church towards the sacristy area and met with Fr Oliver, a priest who had also traveled with the group to Medjugorje. When he was told what had happened he was deeply moved and immediately returned inside the church to pray the Glorious Mystery of the Rosary as is customary after the evening Mass in Medjugorje.
By then others had started to gather around Joëlle and Claudia, Fr Oliver returned and then suggested they all go back inside the church in thanksgiving. The group knelt at the foot of the steps to the altar to give thanks and praise for Joëlle’s wonderful healing, and were reminded of the Gospel passage when 10 lepers were healed but only one returned to give thanks.
Then the group moved on to the statue of Our Lady and continued praying before finally returning to their hostel.
Afterwards some pilgrims told how they were placed behind Joëlle when she received communion, and they how had experienced such a strong smell of roses at the time.
Fr Oliver had run ahead of the group back to the hostel and had invited everyone to come together in the main room because he had some good news to share. When Joëlle and Claudia eventually arrived back, the whole group was waiting for them.
Now throughout this healing experience, Joëlle’s daughter Vinciane had not been with her, but when her mother returned to the hostel Vinciane was waiting with the rest of the group, not knowing what had happened.
Joëlle then said to her daughter, “Vinciane, you have washed you hair?” Her daughter responded, “Yes, yes, but why have we been asked to gather in this room?” Her mother asked another question: “You see nothing strange about me?” “No” answered Vinciane. “Then look again!” said her mother.
“You can see!” exclaimed her astonished daughter. The two clasped and hugged each other in joy for five minutes. One can only imagine the emotion felt by mother and daughter and all around them at that time. And the praise and thanksgiving continued until the group decided to visit and pray at the Blue Cross, the place of so many of Our Lady’s apparitions.
Joëlle later gave more details about her healing. She said that it was on the first night after Mass that she was able to distinguish light, see people’s faces and their lips move. During the following days her vision gradually improved. She is now able to see her two brothers and parents after 42 years of being blind. She said it was her parents who taught her to love Jesus and Mary and she has never stopped praying to them. She said she is also grateful for the gift of Vinciane, her “torch”, as she describes her daughter.
After she regained her sight Joëlle was faced with many difficulties adjusting to her new world, especially at the sight of so many tall buildings and seeing so many people. This would often produce an adverse reaction in her and she would feel sick. But Joëlle said that with the grace of Jesus and Mary she will overcome the problems and challenges that her healing has brought. Now she can distinguish colours, houses, trees and vegetation, cars, people, the sun, and her cat! And although she is still under the care of an ophthalmologist, Joëlle said that she has firm faith that Jesus will complete the work he has started. Her daughter is now able to have her own room in their apartment and has said to her mother, “Peace lives in our apartment!”
A final word from Joëlle: “This healing has given me the body of an adult, but left me with the heart of a child..”

White Christmas in Medjugorje?
It seems that Medjugorje could be in for a white Christmas. Medjugorje.net is reporting that the temperature has reached freezing point and it’s beginning to snow. It’s very rare that Medjugorje sees snow, especially at this time of the year. But it did snow there at the end of January this year, as seen in this picture of some of the sisters from the Community of the Beatitudes enjoying the heavy fall. photo by Sr Teresa
UPDATE: Yesterday’s snowfall was immediately followed by rain overnight and today, which has cleared the snow. But there is still another four days left for it to snow again.

The Ratzinger Report and Medjugorje
![]() |
| Before his untimely death in November 2000, Medjugorje priest Fr Slavko Barbaric is pictured in discussion with cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI |
• This is an extract from the book The Ratzinger Report, an interview with Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) conducted by the writer and journalist Vittorio Messori. The english-laguage edition was published in 1985 by Ignatius Press.
VM – On the same them (Fatima), it is well known that for years, now, a village in Yugoslavia, Medjugorje, is at the center of world attention because of reported “apparitions” which – whether true or not – have already drawn millions of pilgrims. But they have also provoked deplorable conflicts between the Franciscans who govern the parish and the bishop of the local diocese. Is a clarifying statement of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the highest court in this matter, to be expected, with, of course, the approval of the Pope, which is indispensable for each one of its documents?
JR – “In this area, more than ever, patience is the fundamental principle of the policy of our Congregation. No apparition is indispensable to the faith; Revelation terminated with Jesus Christ. He himself is the Revelation. But we can certainly not prevent God from speaking to our time through simple persons and also through extraordinary signs that point to the insufficiency of the cultures stamped by rationalism and positivism that dominate us. The apparitions that the Church has officially approved – especially Lourdes and Fatima – have their precise place in the development of the life of the Church in the last century. They show, among other things, that Revelation – still unique, concluded and therefore insurpassable – is not yet a dead thing but something alive and vital. Moreover – prescinding Medjugorje, on which I cannot express a judgment since the case is still being examined by the Congregation – one of the signs of our times is that the announcements of ‘Marian apparitions’ are multiplying all over the world. For example, reports are arriving from Africa and from other continents at the section of the Congregations that is competent to deal with such reports.”
VM – Besides the traditional element of patience and prudence, on what criteria does the Congregation base itself for a judgment, in the face of the multiplication of these facts?
JR – One of the criteria is to separate the aspect of the true or presumed ‘spirituality’ of the apparition from that of its spiritual fruits. The pilgrimages of ancient Christianity were often concentrated on places with respect to which our modern critical spirit would be horrified as to the ‘scientific truth’ of the tradition bound up with them. This does not detract from the fact that those pilgrimages were fruitful, beneficial, rich in blessings and important for the life of the Christian people. The problem is not so much that of modern hyper-criticism (which ends up later, moreover, in a form of new credulity), but it is that of the evaluation of the vitality and the orthodoxy of the religious life that is developing around these places.
And here is a sign for you...
MailOnline is reporting today that the British Red Cross has banned the celebration of Christmas from all of its 430 fund-raising shops in the UK and staff have been ordered to take down decorations and to remove any other signs of the Christian festival.
Doesn’t the Red Cross charity understand the significance of its own logo – the sign of the cross?
Simeon said to Mary “You see this child: he is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected – and a sword will pierce your own soul too – so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare.” Luke 2 : 34-35

Of kings and queens and royal genes
• I can track back seven generations on my family tree without much effort, but in today’s Gospel Matthew has managed to go back 42 generations on the genealogy of Jesus!
We can see from this there is a past history related to Jesus. He didn’t arrive from nowhere. He belonged to a family. And the same truth can be applied to each of us. We belong to a family, a family that has its origin in God, our Father in heaven. So we know where the line begins, even if it is not possible to record all of our ancestors. But 42 generations is pretty good going. Royal families are able to track back in this way, and that is what Jesus is: a royal, a king. Not any old royal or king but the King of Kings, King of heaven and earth.
The Jewish leaders were not happy to discover that Jesus was a king, and Pilate thought that the kingdom of Jesus applied only to the Jewish nation. But Jesus was able to enlighten the Roman governor by telling him: “Mine is not a kingdom of this world… Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth and all who are on my side listen to my voice.”
And that is the same for us. We came into the world to live in the kingdom of heaven which is not of this world, and to bear witness to this truth. We are in transit until we are finally reunited with our families and God our Father in heaven, the kingdom that is everlasting, the kingdom that provides for all who enter, a crown to wear. We are kings and queens in the making, everyone of us, preparing to share the divinity of Christ and his crown of glory. We are of royal stock. True kinsmen of Jesus.
Jesus replied, “Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3 : 35
I am coming soon: hold firmly to what you already have, and let no one take your victor’s crown from you. Revelation 3 : 11
Dear children, Today I call you to open your heart to the Holy Spirit and to permit him to transform you. My children, God is the immeasurable good and therefore, as a mother, I implore you to pray, pray, pray, fast and hope that it is possible to attain that good, because love is born of that good. The Holy Spirit will reinforce that good in you and you will be able to call God your Father. Through this exalted love, you will sincerely come to love all people and, through God, consider them brothers and sisters. Thank you. Medjugorje message, November 2, 2007

The light of Christ... witnessed on Mt Krizevac
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, where they could be alone. There in their presence he was transfigured: his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. Matthew 17 : 1-2
• The fourth Mystery of Light, the Transfiguration, relates to this passage from Matthew’s Gospel and confirms that when we climb mountains to follow Jesus, when we share in the Way of the Cross, then much is revealed.
Anyone who has climbed and prayed on Mt Krizevac at Medjugorje, or any other mountain as part of their pilgrimage, will be gifted with a deeper understanding of themselves and fuller appreciation of others. Climbing mountains provides an outlook on the world that we are not able to always see when we stay at ground level. Ground level can be comfortable and less challenging, but never provides the same perspective as the view from higher ground.
The journey to higher ground isn’t always easy. It presents many challenges and asks many questions, be it the pilgrimage journey itself, the cross we may be carrying in life, or the physical process of literally climbing the mountain. But the action brings light to our lives.
Peter, James and John discovered this when they climbed the mountain with Jesus. The saw him in a new light, in all his glory, something they had not witnessed before. And that is what often happens when we share a difficult journey with anyone; we begin to see each other in a new light, in the light of suffering and compassion. The climb becomes a process of revelation. With each step, each stone we stumble on, each station on the way, our heart is penetrated with light, understanding, and revelation of the Jesus within all of us. Climbing the mountain is an action of transfiguration, love unfolding. It reveals the light of Christ.
Marija Pavlovic, the Medjugorje visionary shares this story: “Our Lady has told us that when we speak of a third person we often stress that person’s negative side, and added: “Have you ever found anything in nature that doesn’t speak of God? God can be found in each of his creatures, and in the people who are less perfect.” Mary then invited us to climb Krizevac (the Cross mountain in Medjugorje) two at a time with the person we liked the least. Once we reached the top we became aware that we had made a new friend!”
Dear children! In the great love of God, I come to you today to lead you on the way of humility and meekness. The first station on that way, my children, is confession. Reject your arrogance and kneel down before my Son. Comprehend, my children, that you have nothing and you can do nothing. The only thing that is yours and what you possess is sin. Be cleansed and accept meekness and humility. My Son could have won with strength, but he chose meekness, humility and love. Follow my Son and give me your hands so that, together, we may climb the mountain and win. Thank you. Medjugorje message, July 2, 2007
Dear children; With motherly perseverance and love I am bringing you the light of life to destroy the darkness of death in you. Do not reject me, my children. Stop and look within yourselves and see how sinful you are. Be aware of your sins and pray for forgiveness. My children, you do not desire to accept that you are weak and little, but you can be strong and great by doing God’s will. Give me your cleansed hearts that I may illuminate them with the light of life, my Son. Thank you. November 2, 2010
Accepting God’s plan...
I am going to send my messenger before you; he will prepare the way before you… All the people who heard John, and the tax collectors too, acknowledged God’s plan by accepting his baptism from John; but by refusing baptism from him the Pharisees and the lawyers had thwarted what God had in mind for them. Luke 7 : 27, 29-30
Dear children! Behold, also today I want to call you to start living a new life as of today. Dear children, I want you to comprehend that God has chosen each one of you, in order to use you in his great plan for the salvation of mankind. You are not able to comprehend how great your role is in God’s design. Therefore, dear children, pray so that in prayer you may be able to comprehend what God’s plan is in your regard. I am with you in order that you may be able to bring it about in all its fullness. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Am I willing...?
• Some meditations of the Mysteries of Light
1. Am I willing to respond to the call to repent of my sins?
2. Am I willing to do whatever Jesus tells me?
3. Am I willing to listen and accept the word of God?
4. Am I willing to climb a mountain to follow Jesus and witness to his glory?
5. Am I willing to be in communion with Jesus and be nourished by him?
AM I WILLING TO LET THE LIGHT OF GOD INTO MY LIFE?
Dear children! Today I call you, through prayer and sacrifice, to prepare yourselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Little children, this is a time of grace and so, again, I call you to decide for God the Creator. Allow him to transform and change you. May your heart be prepared to listen to, and live, everything which the Holy Spirit has in his plan for each of you. Little children, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you on the way of truth and salvation towards eternal life. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, May 25, 1998

Of vineyards and hearts...
Go and work in the vineyard today… Matthew 21 : 28
Dear children! Everything has its own time. Today I call you to start working on your own hearts. Now that all the work in the field is over, you are finding time for cleaning even the most neglected areas, but you leave your heart aside. Work more and clean with love every part of your heart. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, October 17, 1985
Jesus in confession...
Jesus in confession is far more beautiful than when he wrote upon the ground at the condemnation of a woman who was to be stoned to death for adultery.
Jesus in confession does not write. He erases.

Little man, big heart...

Alongside the bank of confessional boxes outside St James church in Medjugorje is a statue that stands almost unnoticed, except for those praying in front of the small bronze figure before they enter the confessional. The sculpture is of St Leopold Mandic, a Croatian Capuchin friar famed for his extraordinary work as a confessor. Such was his devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation that he became known as the Apostle of the Confession.
But among some of his Capuchin brothers, St Leopold was much misunderstood, especially when his ministry prevented him from being present at communal gatherings. Some of the friars also objected to the largess Leopold showed to penitents. But the little priest transformed the confessional into an experience of human dignity, a personal encounter of compassion, respect and understanding. There every penitent experienced the mercy of God and the kindness of a priest. St Leopold once remarked, “Some say that I am too good to the people, but if you come and kneel before me, isn’t this sufficient proof that you want to have God’s pardon? God’s mercy is beyond all expectation.”For nearly 40 years and 12 hours a day, St Leopold received, counselled and absolved thousands of penitents, and would then often spend many hours at night praying for them. “I give my penitents only small penances because I do the rest myself. I must pray for them,” he said.
A small man in stature, but big in heart, Leopold died in May 1942 and was canonised by Pope John Paul ll in October 1983.
Dear children, I invite you to open the door of your heart to Jesus as the flower opens itself to the sun. Jesus desires to fill your hearts with peace and joy. You cannot, little children, realise peace if you are not at peace with Jesus. Therefore, I invite you to Confession so Jesus may be your truth and peace. So, little children, pray to have strength to realise what I am telling you. I am with you and I love you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, January 25, 1995

Are you the one?
Questions were always being put to Jesus during his time on earth, but very seldom did he give a direct answer. Sometimes he would respond with a question of his own as if to say, “You have the answer to your question within you.”
In today’s Gospel John the Baptist sends some of his disciples to Jesus with a question: “Are you the one who is to come?” This was because John was not quite sure about Jesus. He didn’t quite fit the Baptist’s idea of what the Messiah should be.
Jesus didn’t give a direct answer, yes, or no, to John’s question. Instead he said to John’s disciples, “Go back and tell John what you hear and see, the blind see again, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised to life again…”
Jesus knew that John was familiar with Isaiah’s words from Scripture and that this response would remove the doubt John had about him being the Messiah, for the Baptist had earlier also echoed the call of Isaiah when he preached in the desert with the prophet’s words: “Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.”
So John had the answer within him but had not searched his heart deep enough to find it.
Our Lady also teaches us that in prayer we will discover many answers, especially when we pray with the heart. She even reminds us of her Son’s response to John the Baptist when she invites us to “pray and read Sacred Scripture... so that you will discover the message for you.” Through prayer and reading of Scripture we will discover the answer to many of the questions we may want to ask of Our Lady or of Jesus and so become more certain in our faith.
When Our Lady first appeared in Medjugorje 29 years ago (on the feast day of John the Baptist!), she also echoed the words of Isaiah, John and all the other prophets before, when she said: “Reconcile with God and each other”. And many who have since heard and responded to that call of the Blessed Mother are able, as John’s messengers were, to go tell others what they have seen and heard, how the dead are brought back to life, healed and reconciled with God at Medjugorje.
Yet there are those, who after all this time, and seeing all the visible fruits and conversions, still show uncertainty and ask the question of Our Lady appearing at Medjugorje: “Is it you, are you the one?” They struggle to understand or accept so many years of apparitions and messages. It doesn’t fit with their understanding of the role of the Blessed Mother. And all the time, the answer to their question is within them, waiting to be discovered.
Dear children! Today on this great day which you have given to me, I desire to bless all of you and to say: these days while I am with you are days of grace. I desire to teach you and help you to walk the way of holiness. There are many people who do not desire to understand my messages and to accept with seriousness what I am saying. But you I therefore call and ask that by your lives and by your daily living you witness my presence. If you pray, God will help you to discover the true reason for my coming. Therefore, little children, pray and read the Sacred Scriptures so that through my coming you discover the message in Sacred Scripture for you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, June 25, 1991.

Vicka is back!
According to local reports the Medjugorje visionary Vicka is back in action giving public witness to Our Lady’s messages. Vicka had been troubled with a back injury and absent from the steps of her grandmother’s house for over a year while receiving medical treatment. What a wonderful Christmas present for pilgrims!
• Vicka is hoping to visit Ireland next year as a guest of Finbarr O’Leary whose Medjugorje home is close to the steps where Vicka has been giving testimony since the start of the apparitions.
The following question was put to Vicka by Fr Livio in an interview with the Medjugorje visionary on Radio Maria.• Some say that it is easy for you to encounter the Lord because you see Our Lady every day...
It is not so important to see Our Lady, as it is to feel her presence inside you. It is particularly important to practice what she tells us with her messages. God has given me the great gift of peace, and I don't have words to express my gratitude. It is a grace which corresponds to Our Lady's mission as Queen of Peace. Peace grew in me, and grows with each day, because I wanted it and I continue to want it, and for this I pray every day.
My smile and my joy? There is nothing I want to do more than fulfil Our Lady's wishes. I am her servant; I gave my life to her and so I am ready to face whatever she asks of me. This is where my joy lies. I wish others could feel the way I do and be granted the grace to transmit the love which Our Lady has for each of us. I know that it is a desire of the Blessed Virgin to transmit her presence to the others, i.e. to show us that she is amongst us.
Knowing that every day I have to meet pilgrims who come from all parts of the world – and who suffer for various reasons, or are distant from God – I am not able to be sad. Each morning as I wake I pray thus: “Here I am Lord; here I am Holy Virgin, do with me as you wish.”
We cannot have peace or tranquillity if we let ourselves be upset by problems. Unfortunately, many today live stress-filled lives and are upset by insignificant things. People who do not have peace have to find the time to stop a little and think about their soul; to speak personally with God; to tell the Lord what it is that makes them upset; ask Him to free them of those burdens. Once you've found true peace, it is not easily lost.
It makes me very happy when, at times, someone who doesn't know anything about God comes to me, because then I can transmit to that person the love of God, who is Father and so close to each of us. Then that person can slowly begin to seek His presence in and around him. Sadly, there are many who rather than blind, are closed in their hearts to God.

Just to recap...
![]() |
| Before his untimely death in November 2000, Fr Slavko Barbaric is pictured in discussion with cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI |
“Whenever I would meet Holy Father, he was always very much interested in Medjugorje. He was involved in everything, starting with the time when he was Head of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He is aware that this is the issue of special importance, and he, as supreme authority of the Church, needs to give his precise statement about that matter. Holy Father is very much familiar with the Medjugorje phenomenon; he even mentioned that to me personally. He is aware of huge amount of positive and good influence of local priests, religious, Franciscans, lay people, and therefore, it is very difficult for him to perceive that there can be so many opposing information about the same matter.• Archbishop Allessandro D’Errico, Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia & Herzegovina, in a statement about Medjugorje on March 18th at the end of 48th Bishop’s Conference of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Pope urges giving Mary the gift of Prayer
Underlines Importance of Listening to Our Lady's “Message”
Benedict XVI blessed a basket of roses yesterday that was placed at the feet of the Column of the Immaculate (Rome), but reminded those present that the most precious gift one can give to Mary is prayer.
The Pope said on the day of the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, during his annual visit to the image of the Immaculate Conception in Rome’s Piazza di Spagna. The column of the Immaculate was erected in 1857, shortly after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
“We are gathered around this historic monument, which today is all surrounded by flowers, sign of the love and devotion of the Roman people for the Mother of Jesus,” the Pontiff said. “And the most beautiful gift, and most pleasing to her, that we offer is our prayer, the one we bear in our hearts and which we entrust to her intercession.
“They are invocations of gratitude and supplication: of gratitude for the gift of faith and for all the good that we receive daily from God; and supplication for our different needs, for the family, health, work, for every difficulty that life has us encounter.”
The Holy Father then reflected that even more important than gifts or offerings is the act of listening to what Mary has to say.
“She speaks to us with the Word of God, which became flesh in her womb. Her ‘message’ is none other than Jesus, who is her whole life,” the Holy Father stated.
“With a look full of hope and compassion,” the Pontiff affirmed, MARY TELLS EVERY PERSON: ‘Fear not, son, GOD LOVES YOU! * He loves you personally; he thought of you before you came into the world and called you into existence to fill you with love and life; and because of this, he has come to meet you, he made himself like you, he became Jesus, God-Man, in everything similar to you, but without sin; he gave himself for you, to the point of dying on the cross, and thus has given you a new life, free, holy and immaculate.’
“Mary's look is God’s look on each one of us,” he continued. “She looks at us with the very love of the Father and blesses us.”
“Even if everyone spoke evil of us, she, the Mother, would say the good, because her immaculate heart is attuned to God’s mercy,” Benedict XVI said. “Thus, she sees the city not as an anonymous agglomeration, but as a constellation where God knows everyone personally by name, one by one, and calls us to shine with his light.
“And those that in the eyes of the world are the first, for God they are the last; those who are little, are great for God. He recognises in each one the likeness with his Son Jesus, even if we are so different!
“But who more than she knows the power of Divine Grace? Who better than she knows that nothing is impossible for God, capable in fact of drawing good from evil?”
The Pope reminded those present the message of Mary “is a message of trust for every person of this city and of the whole world. A message of hope not made of words, but of her own history.”
“Thank you, O Mary Immaculate, for always being with us,” the Holy Father said in a prayerful appeal to Our Lady. “Always watch over our city: comfort the sick, encourage young people, sustain families. Infuse the strength to reject evil, in every form, and to choose the good, even when it costs and entails going against the current. Give us the joy of feeling loved by God, blessed by him, predestined to be his children.”
I beseech all of you to offer prayers and sacrifices for my intentions so I can present them to God for what is most necessary. Forget your desires, dear children, and pray for what God desires, and not for what you desire. Thank you for having responded to my call. part Medjugorje message, September 25 1991
Dear children! From day to day I wish to clothe you in holiness, goodness, obedience and God's love, so that from day to day you become more beautiful and more prepared for your Master. I am with you and I wish to reveal to you and show you the God who loves you. part message, August 25, 1992

Medjugorje message, September 25, 1999
Dear children! Also today I call you to pray for peace. Pray with the heart, little children, and do not lose hope because God loves His creatures. He desires to save you, one by one, through my coming here. I call you to the way of holiness. Pray, and in prayer you are open to God's will; in this way, in everything you do, you realize God's plan in you and through you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Dear Children, I, as a mother, am coming to you and showing YOU how much God, your Father, loves you. part message, September 2, 2005
Dear children, my motherly call, which I direct to you today, is a call of truth and life. My Son, who is Life, loves you and knows you in truth. To come to know and to love yourself, you must come to know my Son; to come to know and to love others, you must see my Son in them. Therefore, my children, pray, pray, that you may comprehend and surrender with a spirit that is free, be completely transformed and, in this way, may have the Kingdom of Heaven in your heart on earth. I call you to renew prayer in your families by reading the Sacred Scripture and to experience joy in meeting with God who infinitely loves His creatures. Thank you for having responded to my call.
Medjugorje message, March 25, 2003
Wisconsin apparition site approved at local level
Bishop David Ricken of the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin in the U.S. today ruled that an apparition of the Virgin Mary did appear in rural Brown County in 1859 to Belgian-born Sr Adele Brise.
Bishop Ricken announced his findings at a crowded, invitation-only Mass this morning at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion, now the only site in the U.S. of an approved apparition by the Church.
Interestingly, the decree acknowledges the continuous flow of pilgrims to Champion over the past 150 years, and also states: “Graces have been poured out through the sacraments celebrated in this place especially through the celebration of the Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as well as through the recitation of public devotions and private prayers.”
The decree also points out: “Many of the local clergy and clergy from other Dioceses and Religious Institutes have come here on pilgrimage with their people, also with spiritual benefit.”

| Hundreds of priests are present at the Medjugorje Youth Festival each year. |
• According to statistics published by the Medjugorje information Centre, a record number of priests have celebrated Mass there this year, 36,803.
This figure does not reflect the total number of priests visiting Medjugorje in a year but a total of the number of times priests concelebrated Mass. Big difference. A visiting priest may spend a week in Medjugorje and so celebrate Mass on seven occasions, or maybe double that if he concelebrates at the evening International Mass as well.
If we divide the figure of 36,803 by the number of days in the year this results in a daily average of around 103 priests. But the fact is that a fresh group of 100 plus priests doesn’t turn up in the village each day to celebrate Mass.
To arrive at a reasonable assessment of the number of priests visiting Medjugorje in a year, simply divide the total of the number of times priests celebrate Mass (36,803) by seven (seven being a reasonable assessment of the number of Masses celebrated by an individual priest for his stay in Medjugorje) and we arrive at a figure of 5, 257. In this we should take into account the number of times a priest may visit Medjugorje more than once in a year, and of course, the resident Franciscans who would account for about 3,000 Mass celebrations. And if a priest has twice celebrated Mass in a day this may also count twice in the parish total of celebrating priests.
Nevertheless for such a large number of priests to visit Medjugorje this year is extremely encouraging. They are truly welcomed and needed to help administer the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There are only eight Franciscan priests on pastoral duty in Medjugorje, not enough to meet the needs of the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visiting each year, as well as ministering to their own parishioners.
It’s a similar situation to when Jesus instructed his disciples to cast their net out to the starboard side of the boat. The catch was so great they they could not haul it in. It required other disciples to come on to the boat and help haul in the fish.
This is what happens at Medjugorje. There are not enough Franciscans to haul in the bulging net, and it requires other fishermen, visiting priests, to assist with the catch and to pastor the pilgrims.
Follow the star
SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Dear friends, what immense joy to have Mary Immaculate as Mother! Every time we experience our frailty and the suggestion of evil, we can turn to her, and our heart receives light and comfort. Also in life’s trials, in the storms that make faith and hope vacillate, we think that we are her children and that the roots of our existence sink in the infinite grace of God. The Church herself, even if exposed to the negative influences of the world, always finds in her the star to direct and follow the route indicated by Christ.
• Benedict XVI, December 8, 2009
Dear children! During these days my Lord is allowing me to be able to intercede more graces for you. Therefore, I wish to urge you once more to pray, dear children! Pray without ceasing! That way I will give you the joy which the Lord gives to me. With these graces, dear children, I want your sufferings to be a joy. I am your Mother and I desire to help you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, June 19, 1986

THE PRESENCE OF LOVE
The presence of love
in a storm-swept boat;
the presence of love
when I touch his coat;
the presence of love
when he takes my hand
is all I can hope to ever understand.
The presence of love
in shade and sun;
the presence of love
when I’m undone.
the presence of love
when he writes in sand
is all I can hope to ever understand.
The presence of love
in the darkest night;
the presence of love
come the morning light;
the presence of love
in his command
is all I can hope to ever understand.
The presence of love
when I’m lame and blind;
the presence of love
when life’s unkind;
the presence of love
in a desert land
is all I can hope to ever understand.
The presence of love
when stones are cast;
the presence of love
when I end up last;
the presence of love
when he calls me ‘friend’
is all I can hope to ever understand.
The presence of love
waiting by the pool;
the presence of love
when considered a fool.
the presence of love
when he takes my hand
is all I can hope to ever understand.

The Word of God remains for ever...
All flesh is grass and it’s beauty like the wild flower’s. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on them (The grass is without doubt the people.) The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God remains for ever.
Isaiah 40 : 6-8
Dear children! Put Sacred Scripture in a visible place in your family and read it. In this way, you will come to know prayer with the heart and your thoughts will be on God. Do not forget that you are passing like a flower in a field, which is visible from afar but disappears in a moment. Little children, leave a sign of goodness and love wherever you pass and God will bless you with an abundance of his blessing. Thank you for having responded to my call. Psalm 95 : 2
Faith goes through the roof
Then some men appeared, carrying on a bed a paralysed man whom they were trying to bring in and lay down in front of him. But as the crowd made it impossible to find a way of getting him in, they went up on to the flat rood and lowered him and his stretcher down through the tiles into the middle of the gathering, in front of Jesus, Seeing their faith he said, “My friend, your sins are forgiven you.” The scribes and the Pharisees began to think this over. “Who is this man talking blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, made this reply, “What are these thoughts you have in your hearts?” Which of these is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgive you’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’? But to prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”, – he said to the paralysed man – “I order you: get up and pick up your stretcher and go home.” And immediately before their very eyes he got up, picked up what he had been lying on and went home praising God. They were all astonished and praised God, and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.” Luke 5 : 17-26
• There are many examples in the New Testament where Jesus heals because of a person’s faith and perseverance. In today’s gospel the paralysed man is healed because of the faith of those who persevered in presenting the man before Jesus by lowering him through the roof of the house.
Our Lady reminds us that when we persevere in prayer we become open to receiving strength and increase in faith. She says that with faith…
We discover the joy of the gift of life that God has given us…
We receive strength in life’s trials…
We receive the graces that God wants to give each of us…
We are able to ask God in confidence for whatever we need…
We are able to love…
We encourage others to believe and love more…
We bring peace and joy into the world...
Dear children! With great joy, also today I carry my Son Jesus in my arms to you; He blesses you and calls you to peace. Pray, little children, and be courageous witnesses of Good News in every situation. Only in this way will God bless you and give you everything you ask of him in faith. I am with you as long as the Almighty permits me. I intercede for each of you with great love. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Listening to God’s voice in Scripture
God’s voice can be heard in Scripture says Pope...
urges faithful to follow examples of John the Baptist and Mary
Vatican City, December. 5, 2010 (Zenit.org)
• Benedict XVI is urging the faithful to prepare for the birth of Christ by listening to the voice of God, which he says “resounds in the desert of the world through the sacred Scriptures.”
The Pope said this today in a brief reflection on the figure of John the Baptist during his weekly address before praying the midday Angelus with those gathered in St Peter's Square.
“The precursor of Jesus, situated between the Old and the New Covenants, is like a star that shines before the rising of the Sun, of Christ,” the Holy Father reflected.
The Pontiff urged the faithful to likewise “listen to God’s voice, which resounds in the desert of the world through the sacred Scriptures, especially when they are preached with the power of the Holy Spirit.”
“Faith,” he added, “is fortified the more that it is illuminated by the divine Word.”
Benedict XVI offered Our Lady as a model for listening, and quoted his apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini: “As we contemplate in the Mother of God a life totally shaped by the word, we realise that we too are called to enter into the mystery of faith, whereby Christ comes to dwell in our lives. Every Christian believer, St Ambrose reminds us, in some way interiorly conceives and gives birth to the word of God.”
“Let us ask the Virgin Mary,” he concluded, “in whose womb the Son of the Most High dwelt, and for whom on Wednesday, December 8 we celebrate the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, to sustain us in this spiritual journey, to welcome the coming of the Lord with faith and with love.”

Do not lose hope...
Everything that was written long ago in the scriptures was meant to teach us something about hope from the examples scripture gives of how people who did not give up were helped by the Lord. Romans 15 : 4

Pope Benedict smiles for Medjugorje!
• When the Pope mentioned Medjugorje in welcoming Croatian pilgrims to Rome on Wednesday, a cheer erupted from a section of the audience and Benedict looked up from his notes, smiled, then raised his right hand to acknowledge the group of applauding and cheering Croats. The photo above shows the Pope’s reaction. Time and date of smile: 12:25, Wednesday, December 1, 2010.
Hvaljen Isus i Marija
PRAISED BE JESUS AND MARY!
PRAISED BE JESUS AND MARY!
• Benedict ended his welcome to the pilgrims from the Medjugorje parish with the words: “Hvaljen Isus i Marija!”
The Pope’s use of this phrase made his greeting to the people of Medjugorje even more personal as it is a standard salutation used by the Medjugorje visionaries and villagers that means “Praised be Jesus and Mary.”
Last year, on December 30, cardinal Christoph Schönborn began his homily in St James church with the same words: “Hvaljen Isus i Marija.” The cardinal repeated the phrase several times and urged the congregation to repeat it with him, knowing and understanding how much this greeting means to the people of Medjugorje.

Pope’s special greeting for Medjugorje pilgrims
Vatican City (VIS) - December 1
At the end of today’s general audience, during part of the greeting of groups in different languages, the Pope addressed the Croatian crowd of pilgrims: “I greet all Croatian pilgrims, and especially those from the parish of St James, Medjugorje! Your pilgrimage to Rome is part of the way of preparation for the coming of the Lord. Therefore, in hope, be evangelisers of God’s love in your nation. Praised be Jesus and Mary!”
You will witness God's love wherever you are... January 25, 1997
• Here are words of Our Lady which also draw attention to the parish of Medjugorje:
Dear children! I have chosen this parish in a special way and I wish to lead it. I am guarding it in love and I want everyone to be mine. Thank you for having responded tonight. I wish you always to be with me and my Son in ever greater numbers. I shall speak a message to you every Thursday. Medjugorje message, March 1, 1984
Thank you for having responded to my call! Dear children, you in the parish, be converted. This is my other wish. That way all those who shall come here shall be able to convert. Medjugorje message, March 8, 1984
