Sent by God...

I tell you most solemnly, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. John 13 : 20

Dear children! God sent me among you out of love that I may lead you towards the way of salvation. Many of you opened your hearts and accepted my messages, but many have become lost on this way and have never come to know the God of love with the fullness of heart. Therefore, I call you to be love and light where there is darkness and sin. I am with you and bless you all. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Witnessing to the love of God...

For what I have spoken does not come from myself; no, what I was to say, what I had to speak, was commanded by the Father who sent me, and I know that his commands mean eternal life. And therefore what the Father has told me is what I speak.
John 12 : 49-50

My dear children! Today I want to call all of you to decide for Paradise. The way is difficult for those who have not decided for God. Dear children, decide and believe that God is offering himself to you in his fullness. You are invited and you need to answer the call of the Father, who is calling you through me. Pray, because in prayer each one of you will be able to achieve complete love. I am blessing you and I desire to help you so that each one of you might be under my motherly mantle. Thank you for having responded to my call. October 25, 1987

Proclaiming the message...

Those who had escaped during the persecution that happened because of Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, but they usually proclaimed the message only to Jews. Some of them, however, who came from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch where they started preaching to the Greeks, proclaiming the Good News of the Lord Jesus to them as well. The Lord helped them, and a great number believed and were converted to the Lord. Acts 11 : 19-21

I call you, little children, to pray so that through your prayers I can help you to have all the more hearts be opened to my messages. part Medjugorje message, April 25, 2010.

Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel

Good counsel is one of the seven gifts bestowed when we are confirmed by the Holy Spirit. The image above, also known as the Mother of Tenderness, is most often associated with Our Lady of Good Counsel. It can be traced back to the year 1467 to Genazzano, Italy, a small town thirty miles southeast of Rome. It is presently located in a side chapel, built in the early 1600’s, in the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, from which the image derives its name.

For the past 28 years, Our Lady Queen of Peace, has been counseling pilgrims with her messages from Medjugorje, reminding us of her motherly tenderness, and guiding souls to the answer to all difficulties in life, her Son, Jesus. She is present to help and guide each of us through our trials and in deciding for God.

With joy I wish to guide you and show you the joy into which I desire to bring each one of you. Therefore, dear children, pray and surrender completely to me. part message, December 11, 1986

Dear children! Today again I am calling you to prayer to complete surrender to God. You know that I love you and am coming here out of love so I could show you the path to peace and salvation for your souls. I want you to obey me and not permit Satan to seduce you. part message, February 25, 1988

Dear children! Today in a special way I bring the little Jesus to you, that He may bless you with His blessing of peace and love. Dear children, do not forget that this is a grace which many people neither understand nor accept. Therefore, you who have said that you are mine, and seek my help, give all of yourself. part message, December 25, 1991

Pray, dear children, and have more trust in me because I am here in order to help you and to guide you on a new path toward a new life. Therefore, dear little children, listen and live what I tell you because it is important for you when I shall not be with you any longer that you remember my words and all that I told you. I call you to begin to change your life from the beginning and that you decide for conversion not with words but with your life. part message, October 25, 1992

Pray for my intentions...

I am asked many times to pray for people, for all sorts of reasons. I also often request others to pray for my family. And I don’t have any problem with this. But it is very rare that I ask for prayers for myself, and I have never considered, until lately, why this is.

Just recently, I experienced a health scare, and felt the need for prayers from others, but it was difficult to ask directly and usually, after explaining what my situation was, I waited for the other person to make the offer. Pride seemed to be lurking in the background somewhere – but I came to understand what a humbling experience it is for anyone to ask another person to pray for them – and it made me appreciate even more how important my prayer was when requested, and the humility necessary to ask.

And this led me to realise just how truly humble Our Lady is when she asks us to pray for her intentions, and how important and powerful our prayers are if the Mother of God can humble herself and ask for prayers through her messages given at Medjugorje.

Imagine: God’s Mother asking us for prayers – to pray for her intentions! She even says that our prayers can stop wars!

Here is Our Lady empowering us and the world with her simple, repeated request for prayer. She also says that without our prayers she cannot help us to fulfil the message which God has given her to give to us! This really emphasises just how important our prayers are in God’s plan. Throughout the 29 years of apparitions Our Lady is constantly directing and guiding us how to pray and what to pray for:

Pray for the Holy Spirit to inspire you with the spirit of prayer... (June 9, 1984)
Pray that Satan’s plan will not be realised... (July 5, 1984)
Pray even more these days for the conversion of sinners... (Aug 2, 1984)
Pray at the foot of the Cross for peace... (Sep 6, 1984)

Pray that prayer prevails in your hearts at every moment... (May 2, 1985)
Your prayers are necessary to me so that God may be glorified through all of you... (Jan 16, 1986)
Pray for how you might be a witness of my presence... (Jan 30, 1986)
Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit... (April 17, 1986)
Pray that the truth prevails in all hearts... (Oct 2, 1986)

If you pray, God will help you to discover the true reason for my coming... (June 25, 1991).

Your prayers are necessary... (Nov 25, 1991)
Pray, little children, to be able to come closer to me... (July 25, 1992)
Today I thank you for your prayers. All of you have helped me so that this war may end as soon as possible... (Jan 25, 1994)

April message of Our Lady given to Marija

This is today’s message given to the Medjugorje seer Marija.

Dear children! At this time, when in a special way you are praying and seeking my intercession, I call you, little children, to pray so that through your prayers I can help you to have all the more hearts be opened to my messages. Pray for my intentions. I am with you and I intercede before my Son for each of you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, April 25, 2010

Vocations Sunday

Today is Good Shepherd Sunday and also Vocations Sunday. Medjugorje has inspired many vocations to the priesthood and religious life since the apparitions of Our Lady Queen of Peace began almost 29 years ago. This is one such story.

• One day in 1987, Kathleen Martin was introduced to a friend of the visionary, Marija, a young Croatian man from Split who had decided to become a priest. He asked Marija if, during her apparition that night, she would offer his priesthood to the Holy Mother. Marija did so. During the apparition, Kathleen also made a request to Our Lady, concerning the young man, and prayed: “O Mother, a priest is being born tonight. He is giving you his ‘yes’. I would really like to go to his ordination.”

As the years passed and war came to Yugoslavia, Kathleen left Medjugorje and moved to Italy, travelling and giving testimony to Our Lady’s messages and the events in Medjugorje. One weekend, she and a group of friends were on an overnight train returning home from a conference in Sicily. The train was delayed and because the party missed their connection in Rome they had to stay overnight in the Eternal City. For Kathleen, this presented a wonderful opportunity to attend Mass in St Peter’s the next day, Trinity Sunday.

As she entered the basilica and dipped her finger in the holy water fount, she heard the voice of the Holy Father begin Mass. The centre section of seating was cordoned off, and so to get closer to the altar, Kathleen made her way to the wing seating. As she did so, she saw an usher with Mass books and promptly requested copies for herself and her companions.

It was then that a man, holding a child in his arms, called out: “Hey! They’re only for the people inside the cordon!” The voice seemed familiar to Kathleen, and when she turned around she saw the brother of the boy who many years ago had made the decision to become a priest.

“Anton, what are you doing here?” exclaimed Kathleen. He replied, proudly: “My brother is being ordained by the Holy Father this morning!”

Good Shepherd Sunday

I am the gate. Anyone who enters through me will be safe; he will go freely in and out and be sure of finding pasture. John 10 : 9

Dear children! Also today I call you to pray, pray, pray. Little children, when you pray you are close to God and He gives you the desire for eternity. This is a time when you can speak more about God and do more for God. Therefore, little children, do not resist but permit Him to lead you, to change you and to enter into your life. Do not forget that you are travellers on the way toward eternity. Therefore, little children, permit God to lead you as a shepherd leads his flock. Thank you for having responded to my call. The first day...

“If you meet the Virgin on the road, invite her into your house.
She bears the Word of God.”
John of the Cross

The Word made flesh...

“I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” John 6 : 51

Dear children! Also today I call you to be carriers of the Gospel in your families. Do not forget, little children, to read Sacred Scripture. Put it in a visible place and witness with your life that you believe and live the Word of God. I am close to you with my love and intercede before my Son for each of you. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, January 25, 2006

Our Mother...

Who encouraged the Child Jesus to pray?
Who encouraged the Child Jesus to fast?
Who encouraged the Child Jesus to read Holy Scripture?

Only the same Mother who encourages all of her children to do these same things; the same Mother whose encouraging words continually echo from Medjugorje; the same Mother who says:

• I desire to teach you how to love. March 2005
• Do not forget, little children, to read Sacred Scripture.
January 06
• Thank you for every sacrifice offered for my intentions.
June 05
• I call you to pray, pray, pray, until prayer become life for you.

Jesus... the bread which gives life to the world

The people said to Jesus: “What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”

Jesus answered: “I tell you most solemnly, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven, it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread; for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “give us that bread always.” Jesus answered: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never be hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst.” John 6 : 30-35

Dear Children! My Son was born. Your Saviour is here with you. What prevents your hearts from receiving him? What is in them that is all false? Purify your hearts through fasting and prayer. Recognise my Son and receive him. True peace and true love, only he gives them to you. The path to eternal life, it is he, my Son! Thank you. Medjugorje message, January 2, 2006

Mother of the Church...

The wind was strong and the sea was getting rough. They had rowed three or four miles when they saw Jesus walking on the lake and coming towards the boat. This frightened them, but he said, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” John 6 : 18-20

Dear children! Also today I desire to call you all to be strong in prayer and in the moments when trials attack you. Live your Christian vocation in joy and humility and witness to everyone. I am with you and I carry you all before my Son Jesus, and he will be your strength and support. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Repentance in the wind?

The volcanic ash cloud spreading across northern Europe erupted from Iceland’s Ejafjallajoekull glacier late on Wednesday.

In Church terms, “Ash Wednesday” derives its name from the placing of ashes on the forehead as a sign of repentance.

Coincidently, the following day Pope Benedict XVI spoke of penitence:

He said, “I have to say that we Christians, also recently, have often avoided the word ‘penitence’, which seems too harsh. Now, before the attacks from the world that speak of our sins, we see that the power to be penitent is a grace and we see how it is necessary to make penance, to recognise what is wrong in our life. We must be open to forgiveness, prepare ourselves for forgiveness, let ourselves be transformed. The sorrow of penitence, of purification and transformation, is a grace because it is a renewal, the work of Divine Mercy.

Dear children, Today I am calling you to, with complete trust and love, set out with me, because I desire to acquaint you with my Son. Do not be afraid, my children, I am here with you, I am next to you. I am showing you the way to forgive yourselves, to forgive others, and, with sincere repentance of heart, to kneel before the Father. Make everything die in you that hinders you from loving and saving – that you may be with him and in him. Decide for a new beginning, a beginning of sincere love of God Himself. Thank you. Will Rome visitation coincide with Holy See statement on Medjugorje?

Don’t be surprised if any future announcement from the Holy See relating to Medjugorje is timed around the next “ad limina” visit to Rome of the Bosnia & Herzegovina bishops.

Ad limina visits are scheduled for every five years and the next ad limina by the BiH bishops is likely to be early in 2011. The year will also be the 30th anniversary of the Medjugorje apparitions, celebrated June 25. (Perhaps when the Year for Priests ends in June 2011 the Holy See may even announce the ongoing 12 months as a year dedicated to Our Lady or to the renewal of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation within the Church).

The Holy Father’s address to bishops on an ad limina visit is usually published and the following are some comments made by John Paul II and Benedict XVI during the two previous visits made by the BiH bishops.

• Pope John Paul II included the following comment in his address to the bishops of Bosnia & Herzegovina on January 15, 1999:

“I keenly hope that it will be possible to find peaceful, satisfactory solutions to problems concerning the organisation of apostolic activities. This is essential, if all pastoral workers are to devote their energies with renewed enthusiasm to the service of the Gospel.

“The irreplaceable ministry of priests and the prophetic witness of consecrated persons should be joined with the courageous activity of the lay faithful, who are also called to be a fearless and effective presence in your country, through action that is faithful to the apostolic teaching, with the support of frequent recourse to the sacraments.

“This is the vocation of all the faithful, whatever social category they belong to: farmers or business people, merchants or those involved in the service, cultural or political sectors. Their apostolic presence, of course, calls for appropriate Christian formation, which is the fruit of constant, systematic commitment.

• On February 24, 2006, Benedict XVI, included these words in his address.

“As I thank you for the attentive ministry you carry out, I would like to reflect on certain concerns that you yourselves have expressed regarding some aspects of life in your Dioceses.

“It is important first of all that every effort be constantly made to increase the unity of Christ’s flock: between you, the legitimate Pastors, and the Religious, especially those who carry out a pastoral ministry in diocesan territory; between diocesan clergy and consecrated persons; lastly, between all who serve the Christian people, overcoming, if necessary, misunderstandings and difficulties linked to past events.

“The Church everywhere pursues a single goal: to build the Kingdom of God in every land and every heart. The task of keeping the Lord's heritage intact, adhering faithfully to the Church's doctrinal and spiritual patrimony in its entirety, is entrusted to the Successors of the Apostles and to their collaborators in their pastoral ministry.

“Blessed are the peacemakers! These words aptly apply to internal relations among the Church’s members as well as to her external mission. The various ecclesial bodies, in their legitimate parts, are regulated by canonical norms which are an expression of an age-old experience and have received help from on high in their development. It is up to the Bishop, the father of the community entrusted to him by Christ, to discern what serves to build up Christ's Church.

“In this regard, the Bishop is a “pontefice”, that is, a “builder of bridges” between the different needs of the Ecclesial Community. And this is a particularly important aspect of episcopal ministry at the present time when Bosnia and Herzegovina is resuming their journey of collaboration to build a future of social development and peace.”

Ivanka for Notre Dame conference

The visionary Ivanka Ivankovic-Elez is booked to speak at the 2010 National Medjugorje Conference, May 21-23, held at University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. Among other speakers are Irish singer and politician Dana, Milona von Hapsburg and Richard Bingold. Full details are available at the Queen of Peace Ministries website.

A light from above...

I tell you most solemnly, unless a man is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3 : 3

Dear children, Today I call you to open your heart to the Holy Spirit and to permit him to transform you. My children, God is the immeasurable good and therefore, as a mother, I implore you to pray, pray, pray, fast and hope that it is possible to attain that good, because love is born of that good. The Holy Spirit will reinforce that good in you and you will be able to call God your Father. Through this exalted love, you will sincerely come to love all people and, through God, consider them brothers and sisters. Thank you. Medjugorje message, November 2, 2007

Divine Mercy Sunday

THE CRUCIFIXION, MEDJUGORJE • photograph © bernard gallagher

“When you look at a place like Medjugorje, you can see a superpower of mercy. Many merciful deeds were born here or they were supported here.”
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, speaking in Medjugorje, December 30, 2009

One of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance,
and immediately there came out blood and water.

John 19 : 34

O blood and water,
which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus
as a fount of mercy for us,
I trust in you!

Medjugorje... a “Court of Mercy”

“Let us speak about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Sr Faustina calls Confession 'the Court of Mercy'. What is it about this Sacrament in our lives as priests and bishops and also in our pastoral work? How can we not pose this question to ourselves here in Ars? In our countries of Europe, with some exceptions, I have the impression that the practice of this Sacrament has enormously regressed and in certain areas almost disappeared.

“There are certainly strongholds of Confession today. I think particularly of Medjugorje. I dare speak of that because for 28 years it has become one of the greatest strongholds of Confession. Thousands and thousands of people go to Confession!

“Certainly our places of pilgrimage are strongholds for Confession. This is my experience, and that of many of my brother priests who exercised the ministry of Confession in places of pilgrimage. But especially in Medjugorje, they were overwhelmed by the experience of Confession.”

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Ars, France, September 29, 2009

Divine Mercy

Continue calmly and rest upon the divine Heart without the slightest fear, because there you are well sheltered from the storms and not even God’s justice can reach you.
St Pio, September 1916

No travelling soul can worthily love its God, but when this soul does everything it possibly can, and trusts in divine mercy, why should Jesus reject it? Didn’t he command us to love God in accordance with our strength? When you have given and consecrated everything to God, why do you fear?
St Pio, December 1916

The more we are forgiven, the more we love...

One of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. When he arrived at the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table, a woman came in, who had a bad name in the town. She had heard he was dining with the Pharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar of ointment. She waited behind him at his feet, weeping, and her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them away with her hair; then she covered his feet with kisses and annointed them with the ointment.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who this woman is that is touching him and what a bad name she has.” Then Jesus took him up and said, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Speak, Master,” was the reply. “There was once a creditor who had two men in his debt; one owed him five hundred dinari, the other fifty. They were unable to pay, so he pardoned them both. Which of them will love him more?” “The one who was pardoned more, I suppose,” answered Simon. Jesus said, “You are right.”

Then he turned to the woman. “Simon,” he said “you see this woman? I came into your house, and you poured no water over my feet, but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them away with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but she has been covering my feet with kisses ever since I came in. You did not annoint my head with oil, but she has annointed my feet with ointment. For this reason I tell you that her sins, her many sins, must have been forgiven her, or she would not have shown such great love. It is the man who is forgiven little who shows little love.” Then he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Those who were with him at table began to say to themselves. “Who is this man, that he even forgives sins?” But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Luke 7 : 36-50

Medjugorje... the Merciful Heart of Jesus...

“When you look at a place like Medjugorje, you can see a superpower of mercy. Many merciful deeds were born here or they were supported here.” Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, speaking in Medjugorje, December 30, 2009

Dear children! I come to you as a Mother with gifts. I come with love and mercy. Dear children, mine is a big heart. In it, I desire all of your hearts, purified by fasting and prayer. I desire that, through love, our hearts may triumph together. I desire that through that triumph you may see the real Truth, the real Way and the real Life. I desire that you may see my Son. Thank you.
Medjugorje message, March 18, 2007

Dear children! Today I come to you with a motherly desire for you to give me your hearts. My children, do this with complete trust and without fear. In your hearts, I will put my Son and His mercy. Then, my children, you will look at the world around you with different eyes. You will see your neighbour. You will feel his pain and suffering. You will not turn your head away from those who suffer, because my Son turns His head away from those who do so. Children, do not hesitate. Medjugorje message, May 2, 2007

Dear children! I call you to prayer. By means of prayer, little children, you obtain joy and peace. Through prayer you are richer in the mercy of God. Therefore, little children, let prayer be the life of each one of you. Especially I call you to pray so that all those who are far away from God may be converted. Then our hearts shall be richer because God will rule in the hearts of all men. Therefore, little children, pray, pray, pray! Let prayers begin to rule in the whole world. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, August 25, 2009

Dear children! I want you to surrender your hearts to me so that I may take you on the way, which leads to the light and to eternal life. I do not want your hearts to wander in today's darkness. I will help you. I will be with you on this way of discovery of the love and the mercy of God. As a mother, I ask you to permit me to do this. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, March 18, 1999

Dear children! Today I call you to love and mercy. Give love to each other as your Father gives it to you. Be merciful – with the heart. Do good works, not permitting them to wait for you too long. Every mercy that comes from the heart brings you closer to my Son. Medjugorje message, March 18, 2001

Dear children, do not be of a hard heart towards the mercy of God, which has been pouring out upon you for so much of your time. In this special time of prayer, permit me to transform your hearts that you may help me to have my Son resurrect in all hearts, and that my heart may triumph. Thank you. A priest’s response to Medjugorje

Dear B... Where do I start? Perhaps a very sincere thank you for the wonderful invitation to accompany your group to Medjugorje.

I had my doubts to begin with, wondering if I would be able to cope with the journey and the heat. But Our Lady saw me through. It was such a revelation to me, about myself and the faith of so many people, young and not so young.

When I got back home I was tired, but felt so renewed and affirmed. I just could not believe that God and Our Lady could use this broken instrument in so many ways. I kept wondering: ‘Is this really me?’ as the Lord enabled me to find words to speak to so many different people and address their problems.

I am now facing, once again, the reality of daily life and am trying, with Our Lady’s help, to build on what she gave me in Medjugorje.

I look forward to the reunion and with God’s help further pilgrimages. Many, many thanks. I have received so much from the pilgrimage. You are all in my daily prayers and I hope to offer Mass weekly for all the group and all those who celebrated Confession with me.

Yours sincerely, Fr Brendan

Visiting Medjugorje with an open mind...

Mary’s mission is to lead people to God; to lead people to conversion; to lead people to prayer. “Pray, pray, pray” is one of her constant calls.

On November 25, 2008, her message was: “Dear children, I call you to pray, pray, pray, until prayer becomes life for you.”

In her message of December 25, 2005, Mary said: “Today, in my arms, I bring you the Child Jesus, the King of Peace, to bless you with his peace. Little children, in a special way today I call you to be carriers of peace in this peaceless world. Thank you for having responded to my call.” reminding us of the importance of saying ‘thank you’.

How often do we forget to say ‘thank you’ to God; to each other; thank you for the call to be people of prayer, people of peace?

When we realise how unworthy we are of God’s gifts and graciousness to us, not in spite of our sinfulness, but with all our ‘baggage’, then one’s motivating force can only be one of thanksgiving.

As a cynic who has been ‘converted’ I suggest that unless one has ‘tasted’ what I would call the ‘Medjugorje experience’, one should not be so ready to criticise and write it off. Why are people so ready to condemn? Why are people so fearful and dismissive? That is their privilege. But why not taste and see? To visit Medjugorje with an open mind is to experience God at work in his people, sending his love and healing through the Virgin Mary.

Mary calls us to conversion, prayer and love. Mary enables people to be healed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Healing. As a priest who has spent many hours celebrating the Sacrament with people from all walks of life, people young and old, I can affirm that God is
doing great things in people’s lives, and what is even more wonderful, he has as a result done great things in my own life. I have had my priesthood affirmed and I have been healed of a great burden.

No one should criticise or deny this place of pilgrimage and renewal. No one should object to this place of prayer and peace. God is truly at work. How envious satan must be to see so many people, young and old, in prayer, penance and devotion, finding peace, purpose, and a God of love and compassion. Medjugorje is a place of hope and a new beginning.

Our Lady invites us to pray, pray, pray. I pray before God to give you the gift of faith. Only in faith will you discover the gift of life that God has given you!

May I ask all people to rejoice and to thank God for the wonderful gifts that he gives each day to his people through the Medjugorje experience, through Mary our Mother, whose mission is one of sheer love, leading us to God. Alleluia!

Jesus opened their minds...

Jesus then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to the disciples, “See how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.” Luke 24 : 45-48

Medjugorje message, January 25, 2006.

Our Lady invites us to enlighten our mind through reading sacred scripture

by Fr Ljubo Kurtovic OFM

• Maybe somewhere deep inside of us we expect the Virgin Mary to explain her messages in more detail and make them more clear. However, Our Lady’s messages do not provide us with ready-made recipes for happiness. She has come to direct our look at Christ who is our only Saviour and the aim of life. She helps us with her presence, calls and love so that we can walk on the path of conversion and salvation. She does not come to tell us tales, play with us or entertain us. She has come to call us to the truth, to the light and high demands of the Word of God. She invites us to read and live Sacred Scripture so that we may discover the life-giving power of the Word of God that speaks to us.

As the Holy Spirit has inspired Sacred Scripture, Sacred Scripture is permeated with it. We discover that by reading Sacred Scripture which encourages us to do good enlightening our mind and the feelings in our hearts. St Gregory the Great asked himself: “What can a word of Sacred Scripture be compared with?” And he answered: “It is like flint and steel, like flint which is cold when we hold it in our hand, but when used to strike iron, it sparks and lights a fire. The words of Sacred Scripture remain cold if taken for granted. When, however, a person embraced by the Holy Spirit gives them a gentle knock, they make a mystical fire.”

Only if we rely on the truth of the Word of God shall we disclose the transience of our lives and the certainty of Jesus' words: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” (Matt 24 : 35).

Let us listen to the Virgin Mary for the sake of our lives and our good.

Peace be with you!

The disciples were still talking of what happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread. They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them. “Peace be with you!” Luke 24 : 36

Dear children! Today in a special way I bring the little Jesus to you, that he may bless you with his blessing of peace and love. part Medjugorje message, December 25, 1991.

Easter Wednesday

Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?” Luke 24 : 30-32

Dear children! At this time when you are thinking of physical rest, I call you to conversion. Pray and work so that your heart yearns for God the Creator who is the true rest of your soul and your body. May he reveal his face to you and may he give you his peace. I am with you and intercede before God for each of you. Thank you for having responded to my call.

In search of Love...

Woman, why are you weeping?
Who are you looking for?
John 20 : 15

Dear children! Also today I call you to personal conversion. You be those who will convert and, with your life, will witness, love, forgive and bring the joy of the Risen One into this world, where my Son died and where people do not feel a need to seek him and to discover him in their lives. You adore him, and may your hope be hope to those hearts who do not have Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, August 25, 2008

Caviezel credits ‘Passion’ role to Medjugorje

• In February Jim Caviezel made his sixth pilgrimage to Medjugorje and afterwards travelled to Vienna where he gave an interview to Christian Stelzer for the magazine Oase des Friedens. The Croatian translation is published in the latest edition of the Medjugorje parish magazine Glasnik mira.

Jim, how did you hear about Medjugorje?

My wife came to Medjugorje while I was in Ireland, shooting the movie Monte Cristo. Things were not that great although I worked seven days a week. One day she called me, and I could notice in her voice that there was a change. She started talking about Medjugorje, and how one of visionaries was about to come to Ireland. I interrupted her by saying: “Listen, I really have some serious stuff to do. I am not able now to go into anything with any of the visionaries.” Besides that, I thought that as Catholic I do not have to necessarily accept Lourdes or Fatima or Medjugorje. That is how I thought. I remember that in the catholic school I attended earlier in my life, once we heard about Medjugorje we were thrilled, but we found out soon that the local bishop was objecting and considered the apparitions to be false, and so we lost our interest immediately.

The visionary Ivan Dragicevic came to Ireland and I knew straightaway that I would not have time for him, since I had to work all the time. One day my movie partner Jim Harris wasn’t feeling well, so I got the day off and I was able to attend an apparition. I stood at the very back of the packed church and I wasn’t quite sure about what was going on. But when the man next to me in his wheelchair fell down on his knees at the time of apparition I was deeply moved. I thought: this handicapped man, despite all of his pains, is kneeling down on cold stone floor and he is praying! Today I realise it was only God who knew me so well that He knew where exactly He needed to touch me to get my attention!

Although it might sound strange, on the following Sunday I got another day off and I was able to meet with Ivan, which was my wife’s special wish. During the time of apparition I knelt close to him and I said in my heart: “Ok, here I am. I am ready. Do with me what you want.” In the same moment I felt as something was fulfilling me. It was very simple, and yet unique. When I got up, tears were running down my cheeks and I started to cry with all of my heart.

Ivan told me: “Jim, man always finds time for what he loves. If somebody who doesn’t have any time finds a girlfriend and falls in love with her, he will always find time for her. People don’t have time for God because they do not love Him.” And he continued: “God is inviting you to pray with the heart.” I asked him: “How am I supposed to do that?” “By starting to pray”, he replied. In that moment the doors of my heart were opened. I couldn’t even dream about that being possible. We went to restaurant, and I must admit that the wine and food I had was never as tasteful as on that particular night.

Something started to change within me. My wife wanted to teach me on many occasions in the past how to pray the Rosary, but I always refused to learn. Now I wanted to pray but I did not know exactly how to do that. I just felt that my heart was opened. One morning as I was driving to work, I said to the driver that was taking me for filming every day: “I don’t know how you feel about this, but I would want to start to pray the Rosary.” To my amazement, he just replied: “Okay, let’s pray.”

In the warm light of love that I felt within me, I was able to realise where I really was, how many temptations I had, where were my feelings, how weak I was and how strictly I judged other people.

When did you come to Medjugorje for the first time?

After filming was completed, and that was in Malta, I decided to come to Medjugorje. When I was 20, an inner voice would say to me that I should become an actor. When I spoke about that with my father, he used to say: “If God wants something of you it is for you to become a priest. Why would He want you to become an actor?” I did not understand either at that time.

Again, I asked myself the same question, does God want me to become an actor, to make lots of money and to become rich? I was aware of the imbalance in the world between those who have a lot and those who barely have enough for survival, and I knew that is not what God wanted, and was I to make a choice to seek wealth that does not provide permanent happiness, or to serve God who wants to guide my life?

At that time, Medjugorje reminded me of Bethlehem and I thought, just as Jesus was born in a small place, in the same way the Mother of God is appearing in a poor village in between hills. Those four days I spent in Medjugorje at that time were my turning point. In the very beginning I was still amazed at how much people prayed in Medjugorje. Everything reminded me of basketball camp. There you do not play just one match a day, but continually. The same as in school where you do not read just once a day, but always, repeatedly. In those first days in Medjugorje I felt inner unrest while I was praying, because I was not used to praying that much, and I was asking God to help me. After four days the only thing I wanted to do was to pray. Whenever I prayed I felt connected with God. That was my experience I would wish for every Catholic! Maybe as a child, I felt something similar and I forgot about it. Now it was given to me again.

The same experience continued back at home. In our family we live the sacraments together. As we drive the kids to school we pray the Rosary together. Sometimes when I don’t start to pray my son starts first.

When I came to Medjugorje for second time, I expected to have those first, initial experiences again but it was different. After lunch one day, some pilgrims invited me to go with them to visit Fr Jozo Zovko in Siroki Brijeg. That was also my wife’s desire. I didn’t know Fr Jozo personally, but I was very much impressed by all stories I heard about him. I met with him. He laid his hands on my shoulders. I laid mine on his shoulders. He laid his hands on my head. I laid mine on his head. In that moment I felt the words within me: “I love you, my brother. This man loves God.” Fr. Jozo spontaneously turned towards his interpreter and asked her who I was and said that he wanted to talk to me. That was beginning of a lasting friendship.

That was the time immediately after we finished shooting the “Passion”, and at that time I was able to experience all conflicting forces within me regarding that movie.

Can you tell us why felt that way, and what was the connection between that movie and Medjugorje?

You are probably familiar with expression “to cross the rubicon”. That means it is not possible to go back, you reach the point of no return. The “Passion” was such a rubicon for me. When shooting started, I was 33 years old, just like Jesus. I always wondered if I was even worthy to play Jesus. Ivan Dragicevic encouraged me and said that God does not always necessarily choose the best, which is something he sees in his own situation. If it wasn’t for Medjugorje I wouldn’t have ever agreed to take that part because it was in Medjugorje that my heart opened to prayer and to the sacraments. If I wanted to play Jesus I knew I needed to be very close to him. Every day I went to confession and I attended Eucharistic Adoration. Mel Gibson was coming to Holy Mass as well with the condition that Holy Mass was in Latin. That was good because in that way I learned Latin.

There were always new temptations from which I needed to defend myself, and in those inner battles I used to feel great inner peace – for instance, in the scene where the Mother of God approaches me, and I say to her: “Look, I make everything anew.” We repeated that scene four times and I felt every time that I was standing too much in the forefront. Then somebody hit the cross and my left shoulder was dislocated. Due to that sudden and sharp, intense pain, I lost balance and I fell under the weight of the cross. I hit the dusty ground with my face and the blood gushed forth suddenly from my nose and mouth. I repeated the words Jesus said to His mother: “Look, I make everything anew.” My shoulder was in incredible pain when I took the cross again and felt how precious it was. At that point, I stopped acting and you could only see Jesus. He came forward as to the answer to my prayers: “I want people to see you, Jesus, not me!”

Thanks to continuous prayer of the Rosary – I can’t begin to tell how many Rosaries I said during the time of shooting – I was able to experience a special grace. I knew I wasn’t supposed to use bad language, I knew I couldn’t be rude if I wanted to say something to members of the crew. Most of them did not know about Medjugorje, they were all great actors and we were lucky to get them. But how was I to bring Medjugorje to them, if not by my own life? Medjugorje for me means to live the sacraments and be in unity with the Church. Thanks to Medjugorje I started to believe that Jesus was really present in the Eucharist and that he forgives my sins. Through Medjugorje I experienced how the Rosary is a powerful prayer and what a gift we have when we attend Holy Mass every day.

How could I help other people to increase their faith in Jesus? I realised that this can only happen if Jesus is present in me through the Eucharist, and so people would see Jesus through my life. When we were shooting the scene of the Last Supper I had an inner pocket made in my clothes where I placed some relics of saints and a relic of Christ’s Cross. I had strong desire for Jesus to be really present and so I asked the priest to expose the Blessed Sacrament. At first, he did not want to do that, but I was persistent in asking because I was positive that people would recognise Christ more if I myself was looking at Him. The priest was standing with the Blessed Sacrament in his hands next to cameraman and together with him, he approached me. When people watch the movie and see a shimmer in my eyes, they are not aware that they really see Jesus, a reflection of the consecrated Host, in my eyes. The same was in the scene of Crucifixion: the priest was there, he held the Blessed Sacrament in his hands and I prayed all the time.

The biggest challenge in the movie was not, as I originally thought, to memorise all the texts in Latin, Armenian or Hebrew, but all those physical efforts I needed to overcome. During the last scene, my shoulder was sprained and it became dislocated every time somebody hit the cross. While we filmed the scenes of the scourging, I was twice caught by those whips and I had 14cm wound on my back. My lungs were full of fluid and I had pneumonia. Chronic sleep deprivation should be added to that, since for months I had to get up at 3.00 in the morning because make-up would take almost eight hours.

Another special challenge was the cold weather, temperatures hardly above zero, which was especially difficult to endure in the Crucifixion scene. My whole costume was made of one single piece of light fabric. While we were shooting the last scene, the clouds were very low and lightning struck the cross to which I was tied. Suddenly everything was silent around me and I felt my hair standing on edge. About 250 people who were around me saw my whole body being illuminated and they all saw fire on the left and on the right side of me. Many were shocked at what they saw.

I know that the “Passion” is movie of love, maybe one of the greatest of such movies. Jesus today is subject of many controversies, more than ever before. There are so many factors that threaten this created world, but faith in Jesus is the source of joy. I think God is calling us in a special way in this time, and we need to answer that call with our whole heart and whole body.

HE IS RISEN! ALLELUIA!

O holy night! Night of our gladness.
Christ is risen again.
Darkness and death are no more.

Good Friday message of Our Lady

This is the message given to the Medjugorje visionary Mirjana this Good Friday morning.

Dear children, today I bless you in a special way and I pray for you to return to the right way to my Son – your Saviour, your Redeemer – to him who gave you eternal life. Reflect on everything human, on everything that does not permit you to set out after my Son – on transience, imperfection and limitation – and then think of my Son, of his Divine infiniteness. By your surrender and prayer, ennoble your body and perfect your soul. Be ready, my children. Thank you. Medjugorje message, April 2, 2010

• Since you have been brought back to life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him.
Colossians 3 : 1-4 and second reading for Easter Sunday.

• For us, our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes the saviour we are waiting for, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he will come and transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do that by the same power with which he can subdue the whole universe. Philippians 3 : 20-21

After Jesus was crucified none of his disciples had been ready to meet with the Risen Lord, especially Thomas. But tombs, walls and locked doors – even closed hearts – are not enough to prevent the Risen Christ from being present amongst us. “Know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.”

Man on a mission to bring Jesus to London

By Pia Harold, BBC News

• Why would a man bring a 2,000-year-old story, 107 actors, three crosses, two horses and a donkey, to the centre of London at a cost of more than £50,000?

It's an operation that would be a logistical nightmare to even the most experienced and ambitious theatre impresario. This Good Friday Trafalgar Square in London will host a massive open-air performance of the Passion of Jesus.

The protagonist will burst out between the famous huge bronze lions for a triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. He will perform healings along the capital's roadside then be crucified against Nelson's Column, before resurrecting at the end of the play.

The Passion of Jesus tells the story of the last week of Jesus’s life, concentrating on what Christians see as his ultimate sacrifice for mankind. It's an Easter staple, but seldom has it been performed on such a grand scale as this.

But that is what businessman Peter Hutley, who is producing the event, is attempting. He is no stranger to putting on Christian plays, having done so at his country estate in Wintershall, near Guildford, since the late 1980s.

This time he is hiring coaches and lorries to take the cast and scenery to London. Teams were due to start erecting microphones at 4am on the Friday and work was due to continue all morning.

But what leads a man to bring such a project to the epicentre of bustling London? Mr Hutley says he and his family were enlightened in 1988 when they visited Medjugorje in Bosnia, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared before six children.

It was "like osmosis through my skin and into my heart", he says. "I had the deep feeling of the presence of God and I knew of the great wonders and joy of having faith. And all my misapprehensions faded away."

When Mr Hutley first tried to get people involved in his plays (he began with a Nativity), they thought it was a joke. His first production just involved family members in a barn, with an audience of 50.

But the self-made millionaire , who has run a number of successful businesses down the years, persevered and now his plays regularly draw crowds of 3,000.

The entire cast for the Trafalgar Square performance - except for Jesus - is made up of amateurs. It includes both his daughters and one son. He fund the productions himself and through donations. People are often surprised how professional the productions are.

"People think when they come to my play that there are going to be lots of little girls with fancy wings stuck on their back, flitting around and giggling," he says.
The plays follow the words of the Bible as closely as possible. By staying true to that story it retains a power to move people, he says.

Even non-Christians can find the theme of the Passion - sacrifice, death, resurrection - deeply stirring. One scene in particular captures people, says Mr Hutley.

Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves him and three times Peter says yes. Then the cock crows, because Peter did deny him once. He is forgiven and Jesus turns to the audiences and says: "Be bold, love my Church."

"There's not a dry eye. On time I was standing by this tall man… and he was crying his eyes out. A man of 60 or so."

While Friday's audience will no doubt draw a mixed crowd, Mr Hutley has taken Christian plays at a variety of venues including Lewes Prison, Lockie Head, the University of Wales, and the main shopping thoroughfare in Guildford, Surrey.

But it doesn't always meet with universal approval. Hilary Grey performed in some of the earlier productions on Guildford High Street.

"Occasionally you'd get people grabbing their children away from it," she says. "And occasionally you get people saying 'why do they have to do this on a Saturday when all the shoppers are around in the High Street?'. It was holy Saturday - we always do it then."

So why bring the play to one of London's largest urban spaces? The animals have to be inspected by a vet, there are security concerns, and it will cost an estimated £50,000?

He describes it as an invitation to people to know Christ personally, and to educate.
"We believe that you can't be a good Christian unless you know about Christ... and we want to provide an opportunity for people to know.

"I'm wanting to get every town, city and village in the country to perform these plays because they have such an impact. I will go on putting them on until I can't do it any more. There's no limit."

But in 21st Century Britain, where Christians rub shoulders with those of many other faiths, and non-believers, how does he think the public react?

"It will be dramatic, exciting, good theatre, it's better than looking at television or going to the films," he says. "It's a live performance in a very unusual place. It's a day out with the children, it's a natural landmark for people who are curious. If they don't like it, they can walk away."

So does pride play a part in his motivation?

“I fight it off,” he says. “I’m not particularly egotistical. If you're doing this job, all pride and personal satisfaction disappears.”

For him it is about encouraging people to lead better lives.

"If we could all be good Christians and live the story, the message of Christianity, it would be such a wonderful world," he says.

The Passion of Jesus will be performed at 3.15pm in Trafalgar Square on 2 April. For more information about Peter Hutley's productions, visit the Wintershall website

Welcome to love...

• Ascending the steep and rocky trail up Mt Krizevac is as life itself, a journey never identical.

Some pilgrims walk the path to the left, some prefer the right side, some take the middle line while others choose to criss-cross the bouldered track. But no walk is ever the same or repeated.

Each trek is unique, even for those who are carried – and yet all are heading in the same direction to arrive at the same destination, alone or together, in front or behind; each in their own time.

We make our own journey but share the same desire – to reach the summit, where waiting is God’s welcoming sign of perfect love – the Cross.

Krizevac is our pilgrimage, our life, and no life is ever lived without the Cross. But today we have an opportunity to share this journey with Jesus and to walk alongside him, step by step.

A slave set free

When John went to confession in Medjugorje he was greeted with a warm welcome from the Irish American priest sitting in the box sheltering from the cold and rain outside. All went well and before he gave absolution the cheery priest asked John if he was familiar with the parable of the Prodigal Son.
John replied, “Yes, Father, I am.”
“So you will know about the significance of the father giving his son sandals to wear?” responded the priest questioningly.
John was hesitant in his answer, “Now, about that, I am not sure.”
“Well, it’s like this,” said the priest, “In those days only slaves and servants went barefoot. Free men wore sandals. So before you go I am going to put sandals on your feet to make you a free man!”

John was puzzled by this response and glanced around to see where the priest would produce the sandals from. He didn’t realise the priest was referring to absolution until he heard the words: “God, the Father of mercies, through the death and the resurrection of his Son, has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Shortly afterwards John decided to go to Mt Krizevac and pray the Way of the Cross. The rain had stopped and John took his time to pray at each station and gaze at the amazing detail cast in the bronze reliefs. It was at the fifth station, where Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry the cross for Jesus, that John’s eyes were drawn to the base of the plaque. All of a sudden, the words the priest had spoken to him in the confessional came echoing back: “In those days only slaves and servants went barefoot. Free men wore sandals...”

And as John stared at the plaque, he could clearly see that it was Jesus who stood barefoot and Simon who wore sandals.
