Be perfect...

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, in that way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes the sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike… You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5 : 44-45, 48

10. Lent in Action… BE PERFECT

Dear children; With motherly love, today I call you to be a lighthouse to all souls who wander in the darkness of ignorance of God’s love. That you may shine all the brighter and draw all the more souls, do not permit the untruths which come out of your mouth to silence your conscience. Be perfect. I am leading you with my motherly hand – a hand of love. Thank you. Medjugorje message, February 2, 2010

Reconcile...

If you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering. Matthew 5 : 23-24

February message of Our Lady to Marija

Dear children! In this time of grace, when nature also prepares to give the most beautiful colours of the year, I call you, little children, to open your hearts to God the Creator for him to transform and mould you in his image, so that all the good which has fallen asleep in your hearts may awaken to a new life and a longing towards eternity. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, February 25, 2010

For us, our homeland is in heaven, and from heaven comes the saviour we are waiting for, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. Philippians 3 : 20-21

Jesus took with him Peter and John and James and went up the mountain to pray, As he prayed, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became brilliant as lightening.
Luke 9 : 28-36

Fr NEIL’S COMMENTARY

Ask and receive...

Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7 : 7

8. Lent in Action…
ASK AND RECEIVE

Dear children! In this Lenten time of grace, I call you to open your hearts to the gifts that God desires to give you. Do not be closed, but with prayer and renunciation say ‘yes’ to God and he will give to you in abundance. As in springtime the earth opens to the seed and yields a hundredfold, so also your heavenly Father will give to you in abundance. I am with you and love you, little children, with a tender love. Thank you for having responded to my call.

Conversion of the heart....

I take pleasure not in the death of a wicked man but in the turning back of a wicked man who changes his ways to win life.
Ezekiel 33 : 11

7. Lent in Action… CONVERSION OF THE HEART

Dear children! Today, I call you to become my witnesses by living the faith of your fathers. Little children, you seek signs and messages and do not see that, with every morning sunrise, God calls you to convert and to return to the way of truth and salvation. You speak much, little children, but you work little on your conversion. That is why, convert and start to live my messages, not with your words but with your life. In this way, little children, you will have the strength to decide for the true conversion of the heart. Thank you for having responded to my call. September 25, 1998

Close with love...

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed, he will save.
Psalm 33 : 18

Courage, little children! I decided to lead you on the way of holiness. Renounce sin and set out on the way of salvation, the way which my Son has chosen. Through each of your tribulations and sufferings God will find the way of joy for you. Therefore, little children, pray. We are close to you with our love. Thank you for having responded to my call. The fruit of love is forgiveness...

If your forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will forgive you yours, but if you do not forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failings either. Matthew 6 : 14-15

6. Lent in Action… FORGIVE OTHERS

Dear children! Today I invite you to decide for peace. Pray that God give you the true peace. Live peace in your hearts and you will understand, dear children, that peace is the gift of God. Dear children, without love you cannot live peace. The fruit of peace is love and the fruit of love is forgiveness. I am with you and I invite all of you, little children, that before all else forgive in the family and then you will be able to forgive others. Thank you for having responded to my call. A time of grace with joy and fruit...

• Pope’s Lenten prayer in harmony with Medjugorje message...

“May the Virgin Mary help us so that, guided by the Holy Spirit, we live this time of grace with joy and fruit. May she especially intercede for me and my co-workers in the Roman Curia since this evening we will begin our retreat.”

Prayer of the Holy Father, Benedict XVI, as he starts his week-long Lenten retreat, February 21, 2010.

Dear children! With the time of Lent, you are approaching a time of grace. Your heart is like ploughed soil and it is ready to receive the fruit which will grow into what is good. You, little children, are free to choose good or evil. Therefore, I call you to pray and fast. Plant joy and the fruit of joy will grow in your hearts for your good, and others will see it and receive it through your life. Renounce sin and choose eternal life. I am with you and intercede for you before my Son. Thank you for having responded to my call. Medjugorje message, January 25, 2008

Love of neighbour...

“Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you?” And the King will answer, “I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” Matthew 25 : 37-40

5. Lent in Action… LOVE OF NEIGHBOUR

Dear children, Today, with my motherly heart, I call you gathered around me to love your neighbour. My children, stop. Look in the eyes of your brother and see Jesus, my Son. If you see joy, rejoice with him. If there is pain in the eyes of your brother, with your tenderness and goodness, cast it away, because without love you are lost. Only love is effective; it works miracles. Love will give you unity in my Son and the victory of my heart. Therefore, my children, love. Medjugorje message, September 2, 2008

The seed and the soil...

Our Lady’s messages are the seed,
and your soul, your heart
and your life are the soil.
Like the field which receives the seed,
your heart must be opened and prepared
so that a change may take place –
a change renewing the face of the earth.

Resist temptation...

Jesus was led by the Spirit through the wilderness, being tempted there by the devil for forty days. Luke 4 : 1-2

Lent in Action… RESIST TEMPTATION

Dear children! You know that I promised you an oasis of peace, but you don’t know that beside an oasis stands the desert, where Satan is lurking and wanting to tempt each one of you. Dear children, only by prayer are you able to overcome every influence of Satan in your place. I am with you, but I cannot take away your freedom. Thank you for having responded to my call. The Word of God

Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4 : 4

Dear children! Put Sacred Scripture in a visible place in your family and read it. In this way, you will come to know prayer with the heart and your thoughts will be on God.

Follow my Son...

Jesus noticed a tax collector, Levi by name, sitting by the customs house, and said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything he got up and followed Jesus. Luke 5 : 27-28

4. Lent in Action… FOLLOW JESUS

Dear children! In the great love of God, I come to you today to lead you on the way of humility and meekness. The first station on that way, my children, is confession. Reject your arrogance and kneel down before my Son. Comprehend, my children, that you have nothing and you can do nothing. The only thing that is yours and what you possess is sin. Be cleansed and accept meekness and humility. My Son could have won with strength, but he chose meekness, humility and love. Follow my Son and give me your hands so that, together, we may climb the mountain and win. Thank you. Medjugorje message, July 2, 2007

But the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them, and then they will fast. Matthew 9 : 15

My children, may this time of renunciation be a time when you will ask yourself: “What does my God desire of me personally? What am I to do?” Pray, fast and have a heart full of mercy.

Medjugorje testimony of an Amercian pilot

Happy the man who stands firm when trials come. James 1 : 12

Dear children; Again I call you to faith. My motherly heart desires for your heart to be open, so that it could say to your heart: believe. My children, only faith will give you strength in life’s trials. It will renew your soul and open the ways of hope. I am with you. I gather you around me because I desire to help you, so that you can help your neighbours to discover faith, which is the only joy and happiness of life. Thank you. October 2, 2008

SCOTT O’GRADY, a fighter pilot of the NATO forces whose plane was shot down in Bosnia in June 1995, was rescued after a successful operation in which more than 40 planes and helicopters took part, 100 soldiers and some of the best military strategists of NATO.

After his return to the United States he also wrote a book about the events and the horrors he lived through after the Bosnian Serbs shot down his F-16. Describing the sufferings, hunger, thirst, cold and fear that he lived through in the course of the several days of hiding and waiting for help in the forests of Bosnia in his book Honored Return, he also reveals an interesting detail which has the most significance in the entire rescue operation.

“On the third day of my hiding out, thinking about how survival is first of all a spiritual test, I experienced something amazing and unrepeatable. All of a sudden, in the stillness of my hiding place, I remembered the accounts of my mother’s friend who, before the war broke out in Bosnia, had visited Medjugorje, a little place south in the country, where there is testimony about Our Lady's apparition. That afternoon I turned to Our Lady in prayer. Immediately I felt her presence. It became more and more clear and palpable right up to the moment that I saw her. It is hard to describe in words. The vision came through the strength of my feelings, and that feeling was indescribably warm, full of bliss and peace. Someone existed that prayed and kept watch over my return home. That vision was the most important thing that happened to me in Bosnia. It gave me the courage to hold out in the most difficult moments.”

Through his book the American pilot made public his own declaration given immediately after the rescue operation: “Our Lady of Medjugorje saved me!”

When Ivan first met Our Lady

In a recent talk given by the Medjugorje visionary Ivan Dragicevic, he gave this recollection of the first time Our Lady appeared in Medjugorje almost 29 years ago.

It was June 24, 1981; it was a Wednesday, Saint John the Baptist Feast day. That morning, just like any other holiday, our parents would let us sleep longer than usual, but not that long to miss Holy Mass. I can still remember, as a child, I always liked to sleep longer. But that morning, my parents came to my bedroom five or six times telling me that I had to get up, that I had to get ready, that we were already late for Mass. You know how parents are; it’s not that I had any choice. I got up. I woke my two younger brothers up and we went to the church with our parents. We went to the 11 o’clock Mass that morning. I remember, I was there with my body but I’m not that sure that I was there with my heart and mind. I could not wait for the Mass to end. When I came home, my mother always used to do this thing, she would ask me, “Ivan, who’s Gospel was said at the Mass today?” Since I wasn’t there mentally, of course I had no idea.

We sat at the table together and had lunch. Before we had even finished eating, some of my friends came from the village. They asked me to go and play soccer with them. That is what we used to do on Sundays or holidays. It was around 3 o’clock in the afternoon when we went to play soccer together. We went to a field that was close to my house and we played until 5 o’clock. When we all got tired, we started walking toward our homes. As we were walking, we met three girls. They were Ivanka, Mirjana and Vicka. One of them I knew well; that was Vicka. We went to the same school. But the other two girls I did not know that well because they did not live in Medjugorje at the time. Mariana lived in Sarajevo. Ivanka lived

Some of my friends asked them where they were going and what they were doing. They said they went for a walk and to look for their parent’s sheep. I remained silent since I was so shy at the time. I did not talk to girls. When my friends ended that conversation, we continued walking toward our homes. Many of my friends went directly to the village, but since my house was a little bit further away from it a friend of mine came with me. I wanted to change my clothes and we were planning to go back to the village to his house to watch a basketball game on TV. In those days, the early 1980’s, there were probably five or six families in the village that had a TV set in their homes. A color TV was considered a luxury at the time.

We came to his place and we watched the first half of the basketball game. When it ended, I asked my friend to come to my house with me so that I could grab something to eat. The plan was to go back to his house to watch the second half of the game. I came home. I ate and then we started back toward his house. We were going to watch the second half of the basketball game. However, we never got there. To this day we haven’t seen the second half of the game. We don’t even know what the score was. Something else happened instead.

As we were walking, we heard a voice. Someone was calling us, “Ivan, Ivan, Ivan come to see Our Lady. She is on the hill. I didn’t see anyone in front of me. I didn’t see anyone behind me. The road was very narrow. There were a lot of trees and bushes around. Since I couldn’t see anyone, I simply continued walking. As we continued to walk further and further we were able to hear that voice louder and louder. In one moment, I turned around and I saw one of those three girls, Vicka. She was running toward the two of us, barefoot, shaking with fear. She kept calling us, “Come with me, come with me, Our Lady is on the hill.”

I was 16 years old at the time. I stopped and looked at her. I had no idea what she was talking about. I turned to my friend and asked him, “What is she talking about?” What lady? Don’t pay any attention to her. She must be crazy. But then we realised that something odd was happening to her. We realized that something peculiar was happening to her. So I told my friend to come with her. We were walking with her and looking how she was behaving. Suddenly, we did not feel comfortable at all. We started to feel fear too.

When we came to that spot, we saw the other two girls, Ivanka and Mirjana. They were kneeling on their knees, crying. They were looking toward the hill and staring at something. When we were approaching, one of the girls, Vicka, turned toward the hill and showed me her hand saying, “Take a look up there.” I looked three times and I saw the beautiful image of Our Lady. I think I looked at her no more than five seconds. When I saw her, I ran all the way home. I was running so fast, I’m sure no one would have been able to catch me. When I came home, I didn’t say anything to anyone, not even to my parents. I closed my bedroom door.

That night was filled with fear, filled with so many questions; Is that possible?, How could that be?, Was it really Our Lady? I did see her but still was not sure. Believe me, when I was 16 years old I could never dream that something like that could happen, that Our Lady could actually appear. My parents never told me about apparitions. I never read about them. I didn’t know anything about Fatima or Lourdes. I didn’t even feel any special devotion to Our Lady. I was a practicing Catholic. I went to Church. I prayed with my parents. I grew in faith. I was raised in faith. I was no better, no worse than others my age. But as I said before, that night was filled with fear. That was a night filled with expectations. What was, thinking, “What if Our Lady comes to my bedroom, where would I hide, where would I run away?” I could not wait for that night to end. It seemed like a year long to me.

When morning finally came, my parents had already heard from the village that I was there as well. They were camping behind my bedroom door. You know how parents are, especially in those times. In the early 1980’s, during a time of communist regime, people were not allowed to talk about apparitions. Our parents were so worried. They told us to be careful about what we were talking about and not to take those things so lightly. They told us we would go to jail. But we said to our parents what we had seen and we had said to them, “Yes, we did see her but we still are not sure.

On that second day, a lot of people stated to gather from all around. We spent that day with them. Those people protected us from the government and the police. Around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, all those people that spent the day with us, told us, “Why don’t we go to that hill together? Maybe Our Lady left something there, a sign, so that we could all know that she was there.” Spontaneously, together with all those people, we started walking toward the hill. Before we even got to that spot, roughly 20 metres before, Our Lady was already there waiting for us. She was holding Baby Jesus in her arms. She was floating on a cloud. She smiled and waved with her hand to come closer. That was a glorious moment that I will never, ever forget. That day is still with me.

At that moment, I could not move, not forward, not backward. My legs did not function. But then suddenly and not with my power, we went across those rocks and bushes feeling no pain whatsoever. We were kneeling and we came closer to her. When we were right in front of her, we were overwhelmed. I cannot describe that excitement to you. She was holding Baby Jesus in her arms, and with her right hand – she put her right hand on our heads and spoke her first words. “My dear children, I am with you. I am your Mother. Be not afraid of anything. I will protect you. I will help you. I will guide you.”

It was impossible for us to calm down, all those emotions. But then one of the girls who seemed to be the most relaxed of us all, Vicka, asked her who she was and what her name was. She replied, “I am the Queen of Peace. I am coming my dear children, because my Son has sent me to help you.” Then she said, “Peace, peace, only peace. Let there be peace. Let peace reign the world. My dear children, peace has to reign between man and God and among people. Dear children, this world and this mankind are in grave danger. They threaten to destroy themselves.”

Those were the first words and the first messages that Our Lady gave the world through us.

The Medjugorje phenomenon continues...

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

Today is the feast of Our Lady Lourdes, who first appeared to Bernadette Soubris on February 11, 1858. Bernadette described Our Lady as a pretty young girl with a Rosary over her arm. Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle and she wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot.

The statue of Our Lady seen in St James’ church in Medjugorje is of Our Lady of Lourdes, and was restored in 1986. In 2005, it was given a new crown, designed by the Spanish artist, Angel Maria Garcia Alvarez, to mark the 24th anniversary of the apparitions in Medjugorje.

The Rosary was in the hands of Our Lady in Lourdes and in Fatima... It is in the hands of Our Lady in Medjugorje... Today she places it in your hand... The Rosary – the hand of your mother in your hand. Fr Jozo Zovko OFM

Listen to me, all of you, and understand...

When Jesus had gone back into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them, “Do you not understand either?” Mark 7 : 18

Dear children! I want you to understand that I am your Mother, that I want to help you and call you to prayer. Only by prayer can you understand and accept my messages and practice them in your life. Read Sacred Scripture, live it, and pray to understand the signs of the times. This is a special time, therefore, I am with you to draw you close to my heart and the heart of my Son, Jesus. Dear little children, I want you to be children of the light and not of the darkness. Therefore, live what I am telling you. Thank you for having responded to my call. August 25, 1993

Actions speak louder...

This people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are from from me... Mark 7 : 6

Dear children! I invite you to prayer now when satan is strong and wishes to make as many souls as possible his own. Pray, dear children, and have more trust in me because I am here in order to help you and to guide you on a new path toward a new life. Therefore, dear little children, listen and live what I tell you because it is important for you when I shall not be with you any longer that you remember my words and all that I told you. I call you to begin to change your life from the beginning and that you decide for conversion not with words but with your life. Thank you for having responded to my call. Recognise my Son and receive him...

It is said that St Luke was the first to paint a likeness of Jesus. Since then artists down the centuries have presented varied images of what Christ may have looked like. But recognising the identity of a person isn’t just about facial features or clothes worn. The identity of Jesus is revealed to us in many other ways in the gospels.

In today’s Gospel (Mark 6 : 53-56) we see the people recognising Jesus as he steps out from the boat. But they also recognise him on another front – as a healer. He has a reputation. He is recognised for his good works. And knowing this the people have brought the sick on stretchers to be healed.

In her Medjugorje messages Our Lady calls on us to recognise Jesus. She also points him out in many ways. She present him to us. She says: Recognise my Son and receive him.

The Blessed Mother also calls us to recognise Jesus in each of our neighbours. She says, Recognise him always and in every person.

An old English poem (author unknown) tells of one way in which we can recognise Jesus within ourselves.

Thou shalt know him when he comes
Not by any din of drums
Nor by the vantage of his airs
Nor by anything he wears
Neither by his crown
Nor his gown
For his presence known shall be
by the holy harmony
that his coming makes in thee.

What’s the ‘catch’ at Medjugorje?

Today’s Gospel reading (Luke 5 : 1-11) describes how Jesus, after speaking to the crowds from Simon Peter’s boat, instructed the disciples to cast their nets into deep water. The catch was a huge number of fish. So large was the catch that a call was put out to companions in another boat to come and assist. Peter, who had earlier doubted there would be any fish to find, fell on his knees, recognising his sinfulness, and wept.

This is a wonderful illustration of all that is happening at Medjugorje. The message of Our Lady is given to the people who gather to listen and have come in search of Jesus. The catch is significant. Many fall to their knees, recognising their sinfulness and weep openly. They repeat Peter’s words: “Lord I am a sinner.” And they desire to confess and reconcile with the Lord.

But the Franciscans who pastor the Medjugorje parish are few in number. They are unable to cope with the demand for confession and reconciliation that has resulted from the Gospel message brought by Our Lady and the Holy Spirit. They ask for help from companions in other boats, also fishers of men, to assist with the catch and reconcile the people to God.

Visiting priests to Medjugorje are often overcome by the volume of pilgrims seeking the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Nothing like this happens back home. They have fished all night, in darkness, and caught nothing. Their boat is empty and redundant, harboured in shallow water. Their call to the people is unheard.

But from Medjugorje, the call is heard, people are listening, the fish are hungry for the Word. Here Jesus continues with his miracles, especially renewal in faith. That is why Our Lady says: “Thank you for responding to my call.” This is why the boat of St James at Medjugorje is always full, even sometimes to sinking point.

Now he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.

When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.” “Master,” Simon replied “we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.” And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when they came, they filled the two boats to sinking point.

When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, “Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.” For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made, so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on it is ment that you will catch.” Then bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed him.

God speaks through Mary...

Open yourselves to God and God will work through you and keep on giving you everything you need. Thank you for having responded to my call. July 25, 1985

Praise and glory to God...

In all his activities he gave thanks to the Holy One, the Most High, in words of glory; he put all his heart into his songs out of love for his Maker. He placed harps before the altar to make the singing sweeter with their music; he gave feasts their splendour, the festivals their solemn pomp, causing the Lord’s holy name to be praised and the sanctuary to resound from dawn.

Medjugorje’s lighthouse on the hill

Dear children, with motherly love, today I call you to be a lighthouse to all souls who wander in the darkness of ignorance of God’s love. That you may shine all the brighter and draw all the more souls, do not permit the untruths which come out of your mouth to silence your conscience. Be perfect. I am leading you with my motherly hand – a hand of love. Thank you. February 2, 2010

It’s normal to lead a holy life...

Evangelicals consider the moment of conversion to be when one acknowledges he is a sinner, asks God’s forgiveness, and accepts him as Lord and Master. In Herzegovina, that is only the beginning: conversion is an ongoing, life-long process as bit by bit, with our cooperation, God conforms us ever more to the image of his Son.

Conversion, then, means staying in touch with the reality of what is going on in us and around us, and dealing with that reality in obedience to God, in faithfulness and in love. We find ourselves constantly asking: “If Jesus were here, what would he do?” Or: “If I am to be holy and live according to the call and commandments of God, what do I need to do now?”

To be holy does not mean to be strange, a fanatic or a freak. It means to be a very normal, healthy, balanced person. Forget what the world or the devil might tell you: it is normal to lead a holy life, for that is the life that God created you to live. Holiness means wholeness.

February Message to Mirjana

Dear children, with motherly love, today I call you to be a lighthouse to all souls who wander in the darkness of ignorance of God’s love. That you may shine all the brighter and draw all the more souls, do not permit the untruths which come out of your mouth to silence your conscience. Be perfect. I am leading you with my motherly hand – a hand of love. Thank you. February 2, 2010
