Ride 4 Our Lady...

Some years ago, I remember seeing a group of “bikers” ride into Medjugorje one afternoon, clad in their leathers with the name of their Croatian bike club emblazoned on their backs. They parked their bikes directly opposite the front of the church before walking to St James and exploring the surroundings.

Now it has been announced that later this year, in April, Medjugorje is expecting to welcome a pilgrimage group of bikers.

The event is being organised by the Christian Association KUP-KARMEL, who for the past two years was responsible for the “Run to Our Lady” Marathon which completed its course in Medjugorje.

Robert Rukavina of KUP-KARMEL is hoping that a positive response will be taken up by biker clubs for this new initiative to bring people to discover the peace and grace that can be found at Medjugorje. The parish will be celebrating a special Holy Mass for deceased bikers with those who “Ride 4 Our Lady”.

Our Lady’s January message to Marija

Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. May prayer be for you like the seed that you will put in my heart, which I will give over to my Son Jesus for you, for the salvation of your souls. I desire, little children, for each of you to fall in love with eternal life which is your future, and for all worldly things to be a help for you to draw you closer to God the Creator. I am with you for this long because you are on the wrong path. Only with my help, little children, you will open your eyes. There are many of those who, by living my messages, comprehend that they are on the way of holiness towards eternity. Thank you for having responded to my call. January 25, 2009

Once again we can see how Our Lady’s words relate to Scripture and how her messages are often in harmony with the seasons of the Church .

• The Gospel reading for this coming Wednesday is the Parable of the Sower, Mark 4 : 1-20
Dear children! Also today I call you to prayer. May prayer be for you like the seed that you will put in my heart, which I will give over to my Son Jesus for you, for the salvation of your souls.
• And from today’s psalm reading, January 25th.
Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me,
for you are God my saviour.
I am with you for this long because you are on the wrong path. Only with my help, little children, you will open your eyes.
The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
he guides the humble in the right path;
he teaches his way to the poor.
There are many of those who, by living my messages, comprehend that they are on the way of holiness towards eternity.

President Obama carries Miraculous Medal...

The lastest issue of French magazine Paris Match has published an interesting photograph of President Obama revealing what he always carries in his pockets. Among the items is a Miraculous Medal. The photo also shows another medal with the image of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus. (This photo was originally published in Time magazine in June 2008).

The medal has an association with Medjugorje. On November 27, 1989, Our Lady said to the visionary Marija:

These days, I want you to pray in a special way for the salvation of souls. Today is the feast day of the miraculous medal, and I want that you pray, in a special way, for the salvation of those people who are carrying this miraculous medal. I want you to spread the devotion and carrying of this medal, so that more souls may be saved, and that you pray in a special way.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

On November 27 1830 at 5:30 pm, during meditation, St Catherine LabourĂ© saw at the present location of the Virgin of the Globe (Rue de Bac) a vision of the Blessed Virgin. She was standing on a globe holding in her hands a small golden globe, her feet crushing a serpent. Coming from the open hands of the Blessed Virgin were beautiful rays of light. At that same moment Catherine heard a voice saying: “These rays are symbols of graces that Mary obtains for people.” Then an oval formed around the vision and Catherine saw emblazoned in a semi-circle this invocation written in gold letters, and until then unknown: “O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you”. Then the oval turned and Catherine saw on the reverse side, the letter M surmounted with a little cross and below it the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Catherine then heard these words: “Have a medal made as this. Those who wear it with confidence will receive great graces.”

further information about the Miraculous Medal and St Catherine Labouré can be found at the official website of the Chapel of the Rue de Bac.

Holy See criteria for discerning apparitions...

This text is reproduced from a recently published book: Medjugorje, What’s Happening? by Fr James Mulligan, a priest serving in the Archdiocese of Westminster.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, from 1974 until 1978, spent sessions in drafting some new criteria for discerning apparitions and revelations. These criteria apply to events after 1980, but can also apply in retrospect so that the resumption of certain previous investigations can be carried out...

• At the time of the Annual Plenary Congregation, during November 1974, the Fathers of the Sacred Congregation began a study of the problems relating to apparitions and claimed revelations, and the consequences which often which often result from these, and they reached the following conclusions.

1. Today more than previously, the news of these apparitions is spread more rapidly among the Faithful thanks to the mass media. In addition, ease of travel enables more frequent pilgrimages. Also the ecclesiastical authority itself found it necessary to reconsider this subject.

2. On the other hand, because of current instruments of knowledge, the contribution of science, and the requirements of rigorous criticism, it is more difficult, if not impossible, to arrive as quickly as previously at judgments which conclude, as previously happened investigations into these matters (constate de supernaturalitate, non constat de supernaruralitate); and because of this, it is more difficult for the Ordinary to authorize or prohibit public worship or any other form of devotion of the Faithful. For these reasons, so that the devotions that take place among the Faithful in situations of these kinds can be in accordance with the Church, and bear fruit, and so that the Church itself is able to ultimately distinguish the true nature of the facts, the Fathers consider that it is necessary to promote the following practice in regard to these matters. So that the ecclesiastical authority is able to discern with certainty the authenticity of claimed apparitions or revelations, it will proceed as follows:

a)
Initially, to judge the facts according to positive and negative criteria (cf. below, n.1).
b)
Then, if this examination appears favorable, to allow certain public demonstrations of cult and devotion, while continuing to investigate the facts with extreme prudence (which is equivalent to the formulae: “for the moment, nothing is opposed to it”)
c)
Finally, in due course, and in the light of experience (starting from a particular study of the spiritual fruits generated by the new devotion), to give a judgment on the authenticity of the supernatural character, if the case requires this.

I.
Criteria of judgment, concerning the possibility at least, of the character of the apparitions and supposed revelations.

A) Positive Criteria:
a)
Moral certainty, or at least a great probability, as to the existence of the facts acquired at the end of a serious investigation.
b)
Particular circumstances relating to the existence and the nature of the facts:

1.
Personal qualities of the subject – in particular mental balance, honesty and rectitude of moral life, sincerity and obedience to the ecclesiastical authority, ability to lead a normal life of faith, etc.

2. With regard to the revelations: their conformity with theological doctrines; their spiritual truths; and their exemption from any error.

3. A healthy devotion and spiritual fruits which persevere and endure – in particular, the spirit of prayer, conversion, manifest signs of charity, etc.

B) Negative criteria:
a)
A manifest error of fact.
b)
Doctrinal errors that one would attribute to God himself, or to the Blessed Virgin Mary, or to the Holy Spirit in their manifestations. Bearing in mind, however, the possibility that the subject may add something by their own activity – even if this is done unconsciously – of some purely human origin to an authentic supernatural revelation, these having nevertheless to remain free from any error in the natural order. CF St Ignatius, Spiritual Exercises, n.336
c)
An obvious interest in monetary gain in relation to the matter.
d)
Gravely immoral acts committed by the subject, or his associates, at the time of the facts, or on the occasion of these facts.
e)
Physic disorders or psychopathic tendencies concerning the subject, which would exert an unquestionable influence on the alleged supernatural occurrences, or the existence of psychosis, mass hysteria, or other conditions of the same kind.It is important to consider these criteria, whether they are positive or negative, as indicative standards and not as final arguments, and to study them in their totality and in relation with the other criteria.

II) Intervention of the competent local Authority:

1. If at any time of the supposed supernatural occurrence, worship or a form of devotion emerges in a spontaneous way among the Faithful, the competent ecclesiastical Authority has the serious obligation to inform itself without delay and to carry out a thorough investigation.

2. At the legitimate request of the Faithful (when they are in communion with their pastors and are not motivated by a sectarian spirit), the competent ecclesiastical Authority can intervene to authorize and promote various forms of worship and devotion if, assuming the criteria given above having been applied, nothing is opposed to it. But there must be vigilance nonetheless to ensure that the Faithful do not regard this action as an approval by the Church of the supernatural character of the vent in question. (cf. above, Preliminary Note, c)

3. By virtue of his doctrinal and pastoral duty, the competent ecclesiastical Authority can intervene immediately by his own authority, and he must do so in serious circumstances, for example, when it is a question of correcting or of preventing abuses in the exercise of worship or devotion, to condemn erroneous doctrines, to avoid the dangers of false mysticism etc.

4. In doubtful cases, which do not involve the welfare of the Church, the competent ecclesiastical Authority may refrain from any judgment and any direct action (especially as it can happen that, after a certain time, the supposedly supernatural occurrence can fall into oblivion); but he should remain vigilant about the occurrence in such a way as to be in a position to intervene with swiftness and prudence, if that is necessary.

III) Other Authorities entitled to intervene:

1. The foremost authority to inquire and to intervene belongs to the local Ordinary.

2. But the regional or national episcopal Conference may intervene:
a)
If the local Ordinary, after having fulfilled the obligations which fall to him, resorts to them for a study of the occurrence in its entirety.
b)
If the occurrence assumes national or regional importance.

3.
The Apostolic See can intervene, either at the request of the Ordinary himself, or at the request of a qualified group of the Faithful, or directly by virtue of the immediate right of universal jurisdiction of the Sovereign Pontiff (cf. below, IV)

IV) Intervention of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith:

1. a) The intervention of the Sacred Congregation can be agreed to be necessary either by the Ordinary, after he has fulfilled the obligations falling to him, or by a qualified group of the Faithful. In this second case, vigilance is necessary so that the recourse to the Sacred Congregation is not motivated by suspect reasons (for example to force, in one way or another, the Ordinary to modify his legitimate decisions, or to assist the sectarian inclinations of a group etc.)
b)
It belongs to the Sacred Congregation to intervene of its own accord in serious cases, in particular when the occurrence affects a broad portion of the Church; but the Ordinary will always be consulted, as well as the episcopal Conference, if the situation requires it.

2.
It is the prerogative of the Sacred Congregation to discern and to approve the way of acting of the Ordinary, or, if it proves to be necessary, to carry out a new examination of the facts distinct from that which the Ordinary carried out; this new examination of the facts will be done either by the Sacred Congregation itself, or by a commission especially established for this purpose.

The present norms, defined in the plenary Congregation of this Sacred Congregation, were approved by the Sovereign Pontiff, Pope Paul VI, on February 24, 1978.

Vatican criteria for judging Medjugorje

Although published in July 2006, this article by Fr Tomislav Pervan, OFM, speaks of the criteria issued by the CDF in 1978 for evaluating revelations and apparitions. It will be seen that Fr Tomislav actually welcomes this instruction when addressing the events of Medjugorje saying: “The text has lost nothing of its immediacy and value to this very day. It can be fully applied to the events of Medjugorje with all its implications. It can examine the events of Medjugorje from the positive or negative side with all the arguments presented pro and con.”

• For the past twenty-five years, Medjugorje has been an actuality on the world scene. Today, it has its zealous advocates; however, it also has its fierce opponents. Opposing front lines in the battle are not likely to sue for peace any time soon. Advocates are tireless in their visits to Medjugorje all the while believing the authentic voice of Heaven is the starting point, namely, the appearance of the Gospa—Our Lady. Meanwhile, the opponents are fierce in their opposition and seek out elements of contention surrounding the entire set of events.

In the meantime, the ever-increasing daily flow of pilgrims to this place does not allow us to be indifferent. Facts and numbers speak for themselves. The number of pilgrims is ever increasing. They come from all corners of the earth, are of all colours of skin, and from all nations and nationalities. While other places of pilgrimage mark a decrease in pilgrims and pilgrimages despite being advertised widely, the number of pilgrims and faithful of all languages and locales constantly increases. As a phenomenon, Medjugorje does not have an active propaganda machine: individuals spread its fame by word-of-mouth, witness, and personal experience.

On the one hand, the priests who work in Medjugorje feel they are over-burdened in their daily work and that they are stretched to their physical limits. They are faced with innumerable calls for personal counseling, endless confessions, and constant evangelization. On the other hand, they are also faced with the suspicion that they are teetering at the edge of heterodoxy. The constant criticism is hurled at them that they are fostering something that is contrary to the Church, namely, the non-existent apparitions and the like. We, on the other hand, cannot fail to speak, fail to give witness about that which we have heard or seen, or that which we experience daily by way of our senses. (Cf. Acts 4:20) Hence, we invite all to come and see. So many bishops and priests had their doubts; however, after many hours of hearing confessions, they changed their minds and the doubts vanished.

The voice of conscience forces upon us the obligation to be of assistance to those who are in misery and who come here. We wish to be in harmony with the Church to the very end, and not to sin against the Church's teachings or practice. Meanwhile, the accusations and reproaches hurt. Quite frequently, questions are raised that ask: What need did we have of all of this? Were we not able to be as every other parish, that is, carry out the well-entrenched pastoral patterns within the usual norms of the Church and Gospels? Who was it that cooked this stew, such that, to this very day, the river of pilgrims has not dried up, but, to the contrary, continues to grow greater and more dynamic?

For this reason, and as a friend and participant of these events from their beginnings in 1981, I give consideration to what must be done to change the present situations to escape the entrenched position of persistent denial, constant disputation, or, in fact, indifference and silence on the part of the Church's media all of this while the flow of thousands of pilgrims to this place continues. It is obvious that all the denials, disputations, and silence find no acceptance on the part of the faithful. Meanwhile, Church circles continue to be deaf, and the prohibition against this activity on the part the faithful persists on the part of the media.

It is the inner voice of conscience and the experience of faith that motivate the faithful. I am convinced that the Holy Spirit Himself is the initiator of all these events. I am further convinced that, after twenty-five years have passed, the principle of the locus theologicus (the theological position), according to the notion of the sensus fidelium (understanding on the part of the faithful) and the consensus fidelium (unanimity of the faithful), applies as offered for acceptance by the documents of Vatican II and post-Vatican II, and by statements of Popes following the Council. Things we read about in the Acts of the Apostles are happening here. I am convinced that the Church is being gathered in this place from the four winds and every corner of the earth into the one Kingdom as what took place in Jerusalem at Pentecost. In this place, we find mirrored the universal—“Catholic” Church in miniature.

It is in this sense that I believe the instruction of the Congregation for the Faith entitled, The Criteria for Judging and Differentiating Revelations and Apparitions, dated the 27th of February, 1978, and signed by the then Prefect, Cardinal Franjo Seper, should serve as the vade mecum (that is, the constant companion, the manual) when considering, passing judgment upon, and making decisions about Medjugorje and the Medjugorje phenomenon. The text has lost nothing of its immediacy and value to this very day. It can be fully applied to the events of Medjugorje with all its implications. It can examine the events of Medjugorje from the positive or negative side with all the arguments presented pro and con.

The Congregation for the Faith in its instructions reduces to three levels, or degrees, the norms that relate to reactions to alleged apparitions.

The seers must be examined to determine if, perhaps, it is a question of self-styled visions. Then, all the messages must be gathered and examined and viewed from the point of view of the degree of education of the seers. The mental and physical state of the seers must be examined thoroughly, as well as their moral integrity. All that is explainable from the purely human point of view must be taken into consideration; however, by the same token, all that cannot be explained in purely human terms and with the aid of the most contemporary psychological or physical sciences, and which, in the end, has no cause within human power, must also be taken into consideration.

Following the first phase, if the matter has not died on its own, has not come to a halt or fallen into oblivion, the principle ad experimentum (for the purpose of experiment) comes into play. At the same time, of course, it must be emphasized that the employment of this principle in no way suggests or recognizes the authenticity of the alleged apparitions. It simply channels events to proper and healthy Church routine: practices regarding prayer, devotions, the sacraments, constant spiritual growth and holiness.

When an appropriate period of the ad experimentum phase has elapsed, and in the light of experiences, especially after a close examination of the spiritual fruits occasioned by the alleged apparitions, and of the devotional practices surrounding them, a competent judgment of the events must be given if circumstances demand it.

As regards the first point, everything can be reduced to a simple conclusion: To the present day, in the entire history of the Church, no Marian apparitions were so intensively and extensively investigated (from 1984-2005) on the part of numerous and independent qualified, international experts in the fields of medicine and psychology, or whose investigations and their results were found to correspond to and compliment each other. All of the experts concluded that the subjects investigated were found to be spiritually, psychologically, and physically healthy individuals. They were found not to be hallucinating, subject to confabulation, (auto) suggestion, hysteria, hypnotic or other loss of consciousness, deceit, suggestion or exterior inducement of any sort. Hence, it is irresponsible to publicly proclaim them to be liars or inventors of false visions and messages.

Many experts from the fields of medicine, psychology, and parapsychology have occupied themselves with the Medjugorje seers. They failed to uncover any sort of pathological deviation from the norm in their lives. The scientific experts are capable of reaching the full limit of their tests. However, once they have arrived at that limit, their ability to explain ceases. They are able to discern what does or does not pertain to medicine and pathology and what must be excluded from a medico-psychological perspective. The experts have done so and have left behind a record of their findings. Because of that, and because of intellectual honesty, we, who have regard for the truth, must take their investigations and judgments as to the phenomena of Medjugorje into serious account.

The convergent proofs in favour of the authenticity of the Medjugorje phenomenon are perceptible when one takes into consideration the theological, sociological and scientific experiments carried out upon the seers by French, Italian, and Austrian teams of experts from 1984 through 2005. According to the theologian and Mariologist, R. Laurentin, who has published works of capital value (17 books) on Lourdes, and has thoroughly investigated the apparitions in Medjugorje, the latter give evidence of being more powerful as regards the proof of their authenticity than those in Lourdes, to which the Church gave its formal approval.

According to the teaching of St. Ignatius on discernment of spirits, the causes of those or similar manifestations can be determined to be purely human, divine, or demonic. Effects must always be judged by their cause. In all that took place in Medjugorje, one must ask what the cause was, or where the causal beginnings had their roots. If we take into consideration the first days of the events that took place in Bijakovici in June and July of 1981, the experts who thoroughly examined the seers concluded that the seers had some sort of fundamental and key experience, some initial encounter that put them into the center of something that they could not begin to imagine or foresee, something against their will or inclinations, something they were scarcely able to predict.

Science as such can neither confirm nor deny whether the Gospa is, or is not, appearing, (just as it would not have been able to utilize scientific instruments to register the resurrection of Christ were they to have been present alongside the Roman guards at the tomb of Jesus). All that science can say after twenty-five years is that the seers are physically and psychologically healthy, and that the seers had a deep-seated and far-reaching experience which continues to affect them to this very day, one that it is impossible to deduce from their biographies. All of that is, for the visionaries, a holy treasure. For that reason one must exclude a purely human cause, and, by the same token, one that is demonic, inasmuch as the Devil is unable to yield good fruit that is constant and so long lasting.

Since twenty-five years have elapsed, a review sine ira et studio (without rancor and [with] diligent attention) would be expedient, both in the local Church and the Church at large, as to the fruits which have been given and continue to be given through Mary's apparitions beyond all ideological suppositions and prejudices. When observed from the purely statistical point of view as a whole, close to some fifty thousand priest have passed through Medjugorje, hundreds of bishops, cardinals, and millions upon millions of the faithful. The Una Sancta et Catholica (the One Holy and Catholic [Church]) in miniature comes to pass here every day. Were there something to be found heretical, schismatic, or contrary to Church teaching, the Church would be obliged to undertake measures against such abuse. That has not resulted up to the present. Therefore, a fifteen-year ad experimentum period since the Zadar Pronouncement in 1991 is a sufficient amount of time so as to allow to conclude that no straying from official Church teaching and practice is taking place in Medjugorje. The Liturgy and devotions celebrated there are fully Christological, Marian, Eucharistic, sacramental, and in full harmony with Church regulations.

It cannot be asserted that the particular fruits of Medjugorje are those of intensive prayer and administration of the sacraments. To do so would be to create a circulus vitiosus (vicious circle): there are other places in the world where prayer and the sacraments are a fixed practice; however, what is lacking there are the efficacious effects that we note as attributable to Medjugorje. It is clear that prayer and the sacraments bear copious fruits for the entire Church throughout the world; however, from where and why do so many people come precisely to Medjugorje? Why do they come to this remote place where they have a concrete experience of God and grace, are converted, learn to pray, and subsequently carry the fruits of Medjugorje to their homes, give witness to what they have experienced, and become missionaries? It simply is not possible to separate the assertions of the seers regarding the apparitions from the fruits of the apparitions which we see in the Church.

The consensus fidei et fidelium can be seen by the fact that all levels of God's people, all classes in society and the Church, all peoples, and all races are represented in Medjugorje, and by the fact that Church life is sustained by all of this in the form of witness, divine worship, sincere service, charity, (martyria, liturgia, et diakonia), and, by the fact that all grow in holiness. Medjugorje is a world-wide phenomenon. Its fruits can be seen in all parts of the world. In essence, Medjugorje is a laymen's movement, a movement of faithful laymen, laden with spirituality, devotion, and sincerity toward the Lord and our Lady. The seers themselves are ordinary lay people and, as such, are able more readily to touch the hearts of plain folks who easily identify with them.

Medjugorje is a peace and pilgrimage movement inasmuch as people come here for the sake of inner peace. It is also a renewal movement within the Church—Ecclesia semper reformanda (the Church ever to be renewed), as well as a humanitarian movement, inasmuch as it has accomplished tremendous charitable and Samaritan works throughout the world (a point made by the present Pope in his encyclical on the God of Love). Lumen Gentium (The Vatican II Document: Light of the Nations) clearly states: “Be they most illustrious, be they simple and more widespread, Charisms are useful and are especially suited to the needs of the Church and must be received with gratitude and consolidation.” (LG 12:2) Meanwhile, Apostolicam Actuositatem (Apostolic Activity) states even more explicitly: “The receipt of Charisms, even those that are humble, give rise to the right and duty for each of the faithful to make use of them in the Church and in the world and for the good of mankind and the growth of the Church in the freedom of the Holy Ghost.” (AA 3:3).

After the past quarter of a century, it can be asserted that Medjugorje is about a prophetic Charism—a prophetic revelation that calls for repentance. These Charisms are able to be found in all similar phenomena within the Church. Prophetic revelations and apparitions are about an imperative under the impetus of the Holy Spirit as to how one is to behave here and now, and what it is that the People of God must do in a specific situation. Accordingly, the Church must not relate to such phenomena indifferently. She is duty-bound to investigate such an imperative with openness and, congruently, to act if she recognizes the Will of God in the said phenomenon. It is obvious that the Ecclesia orans (the praying Church) has recognized God's Will and Mary’s presence in this instance, of which our dearly departed Pope spoke in his homily in Zadar (!) three years prior, on the feast of Mary, the Mother of the Church (Pentecost Monday, 2003). On that occasion, the Pope specifically mentioned the above cited sensus fidei fidelium (the understanding of faith of the faithful).

If, as is the case with ordinary beatifications and canonizations, the process begins with the local Church, and, after an appropriate interval of time, investigation, and conclusions based on the materials offered in favor of beatification or canonization, the matter is transferred to Rome, I think that would be appropriate in this case. After all has been investigated at the local level, the entire case of the Medjugorje phenomenon should be transferred to the appropriate Roman dicastery, especially in light of the fact that it has outgrown the local Church’s boundaries and has become widespread so as to encompass the entire Church. The countless prayer groups throughout the entire world have come into existence because of the events in Medjugorje. They carry the mark of authenticity and veracity. The entire phenomenon is caught-up in the very being of the Church and, as such, carries more weight than does a beatification of one of God’s chosen ones. If, as is the case for beatification, the People of God are asked their approval, why shouldn't we do so in this case as well, especially in light of Mary’s efficacious presence in specific places (John Paul II, in Zadar!), and in light of the personal experiences and miracles that individuals experienced precisely here in Medjugorje?

Throughout the entire history of Salvation, God has established communication with his creatures through apparitions. This form of communication is especially suitable for man's physico-spiritual structure: it immerses man's senses, especially his sight and hearing. The Medjugorje phenomenon can be explained in this manner or that manner; however, intellectual honesty demands that the entire affair engage us in light of revelation, mysticism, supernatural experiences and so many other similar experiences in other cases, and, for that matter, in other faiths.

If God has truly spoken throughout history, why should we be exempted from such a manner of communication wherein the Holy Ghost makes use of apparitions for the sake of the many needs of the contemporary world? The greater the misery in the world, so much the greater is the need for God's voice and communication. Hence, we might well conclude as did Paul: Do not extinguish the spirit. Do not disdain prophetic communications. Investigate all and hold on to what is good! (1 Thess. 5:19-21).

Vatican denial on apparitions document

Here is a report from Tom McFeeley and NCRegister.com concerning recent rumours about the Vatican issuing new guidelines for evaluating apparitions. The rumours took off following several articles in the UK national press placed by Catholic Herald news editor Simon Caldwell. It now appears that Caldwell, a known adversary of Medjugorje, did not bother to check his story with the CDF or the Vatican Press Office before publishing. If he did then perhaps he would have received the same denial as did the representative of the National Catholic Register.

A Vatican official has denied a document is being prepared about how to deal with alleged Marian apparitions and visions, such as those at Medjugorje.

According to some reports that have circulated in the last few days, Pope Benedict has instructed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to prepare a vademecum, or handbook, on the matter. It reportedly would require individuals who said they have experienced appearances or visions of the Virgin Mary to remain silent while their claims are investigated carefully by Church authorities.

The document was also rumored to specify that local bishops should set up commissions composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, theologians and priests to investigate the claimed apparitions.

But according to a Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith official who spoke with Register correspondent Edward Pentin, there is no truth to these reports. The official stated emphatically that no work is underway on a vademecum or on any other type of document regarding the question of how to handle claims of apparitions.

Look, there is the Lamb of God!

Sometimes light can play tricks, especially at night, but I can’t help wondering when I photographed the Risen Christ at Medjugorje in March last year, if I really did see the “Lamb of God” at the head of the bronze sculpture.

Shown here are three enlargements of the head from full length shots of the figure taken at night.

Compare them to the above illustration and the one below which shows how the face of Christ normally appears to pilgrims on the ground. Did the sculptor intend to achieve this double image effect?

I have no problem with seeing an imposition of the “sacrificial Lamb” on the sculpture, especially at Medjugorje – where the Lamb of God takes away the sins of the world and grants us peace. I would be interested to hear the views of others on this. Email me.

Be purified of sins and in Jesus, my Son, recognise the sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the entire world. part message to Mirjana, March 2, 2008

These photographs of the “Lamb of God” were taken in Medjugorje five days later, March 7.

Just as John the Baptist pointed out Jesus as the Lamb of God to two disciples at the River Jordan, Our Lady is also telling us to
repent of our sins though Jesus and recognise the ‘sacrifice of atonement’.

Looking at photographs of the Risen Christ taken by other photographers, the Lamb of God feature is often visible – if you know what to look for. Even though the sculptor has since confirmed the lamb’s head was not intended when he designed the figure, nevertheless the feature is there to be seen. It is visible but unrecognised. It requires pointing out, and even then, there are some who are unable to recognise the “lamb”.

Jesus, remained unrecognised in this way for 30 years until John the Baptist made reference to the Lamb of God: “Look, there is the lamb of God”. Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. John 1 : 35-36

A listening heart is a heart that responds

O that today you would listen to his voice! “Harden not your hearts...”
Ps 94 v 8, and response to the Responsorial Psalm for today’s Mass.

While great heavenly grace is being lavished upon you, your hearts remain hard and without response. My children, why do you not give me your hearts completely?

Some thoughts on Franciscan Order’s anniversary

2009 will see the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Franciscan order. I wonder if the Franciscans associated with Bosnia & Herzegovina and Medjugorje in particular will have any reason for added celebration during this special anniversary year – like the Holy See granting international Shrine status for St James church and Medjugorje.

It was in 1209 that Francis set out on a journey of personal conversion and publicly began to preach repentance. It was Francis who heard the the Lord’s voice say to him, “Francis, rebuild my Church which you see, is falling down.”

Francis took this as a reference to the ruined church of St Damian where he heard the Lord’s voice speak from a crucifix. He did rebuild St Damian‘s and also continued repairing other ruined churches.

However, he later understood that the Lord’s words really meant that he was being called to rebuild the Church on the foundations of the Gospel.

From all of this we see the link with Medjugorje and Our Lady’s apparitions. She first appeared at Medjugorje on June 24, the Feast of John the Baptist who also preached repentance. Our Mother’s first message to the world was a call to repentance: “...Peace, reconcile with God and each other.”

And during the past 28 years we can see how the Church is being rebuilt through the messages and guidance given by Our Lady at the parish of Medjugorje which is under the pastoral care of the Franciscans.

Like Francis, millions of pilgrims have taken a new path to personal conversion and in doing so are rebuilding the Church on the foundations of the Gospel. Our Lady’s messages are Gospel based.

It would be a wonderful gift to the Church and the Franciscans if the Holy See was to bless Medjugorje with Shrine status during the Order’s 800th anniversary year.

Looking for Jesus...

In the morning, long before dawn, Jesus got up and left the house, and went off to a lonely place and prayed there. Simon and his companions set out in search of him, and when they found him they said, “Everybody is looking for you.” Mark 1 : 35-37

Dear children! I am your Mother and I invite you to come closer to God through prayer because only He is your peace, your Saviour. Therefore, little children, do not seek comfort in material things, but rather seek God. part message, September 25, 1993

The whole town came...

The whole town came crowding round the door, and he cured many who were suffering from diseases of one kind or another...
Mark 1 : 32-35

Only if you come closer to Jesus will you comprehend the immeasurable love He has for each of you.

Repent and believe the Good News

After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. “The time has come” he said “and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.” Mark 1 : 14-15

Peace, peace, peace! Only peace! Make your peace with God and among yourselves... June 26, 1981
This was the message proclaimed by Our Lady on the third day of her visit to Medjugorje – a call to peace through repentance and reconciliation.

The Baptism of the Lord

I have appointed you as covenant of the people and light of the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison, and those who live in darkness from the dungeon.
Isaiah 42 : 6-7

Dear children! Today I am calling on you to decide whether or not you wish to live the messages which I am giving you. I wish you to be active in living and spreading the messages. Especially, dear children, I wish that you all be the reflection of Jesus, which will enlighten this unfaithful world walking in darkness. I wish all of you to be the light for everyone and that you give witness in the light. Dear children, you are not called to the darkness, but you are called to the light. Therefore, live the light with your own life. Thank you for having responded to my call. June 5, 1986

The Lasting Light...

With the season of Christmas drawing to a close, many of the decorative lights and glitter that can be seen in our homes, on trees, in stores and on the streets, will be dismantled, put away and stored for another year.

Although pretty and attractive, the electric lights are only artificial and not the authentic light that Our Lady speaks of in her message below. Far more brighter is the lasting light that God instills in those who choose to be torch bearers for truth and love. And this is the challenge that we are faced with after Christmas, to continue to be a shining light for others throughout the year.

Sometimes our own light can grow dim, overshadowed by the darkness within our world. It is only by surrendering to God that the source of all light can reach our heart and illuminate our life and the lives of others with God’s love and mercy.

Dear children! Today on the birthday of my Son, when my heart is filled with immeasurable joy and love, I invite you to open fully and surrender fully to God. Throw out all the darkness from your heart and let God’s light and God’s love enter your heart and dwell there forever. Be carriers of God’s light and love to all people, so everyone, in you and through you, can feel and experience the authentic light and love that only God is able to give you. I am blessing you with my motherly blessing! December 25, 1999

Message given to Mirjana, January 2

While great heavenly grace is being lavished upon you, your hearts remain hard and without response. My children, why do you not give me your hearts completely? I only desire to put in them peace and salvation – my Son. With my Son your soul will be directed to noble goals and you will never get lost. Even in greatest darkness you will find the way. My children decide for a new life with the name of my Son on your lips. Thank you.

• In the early days of the apparitions; the visionaries were always being requested by pilgrims and priests to ask Our Lady this or that... and often Our Lady would respond in a positive manner. But sometimes she would choose not to answer questions asked out of curiosity.

Now it is Our Lady asking us the question, not out curiosity but with concern for our soul: My children, why do you not give me your hearts completely?

This is a very serious and direct question by Our Blessed Mother. It’s a searching question that penetrates deep into the soul. With this question can come pain because we are being truly confronted by our Mother. These are no sweet and sugary words.

How we choose to absorb this question is an individual decision. But we should recognise that the question is a call to surrender and conversion.

Our Lady is waiting to hear our heart say: “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let what you have said be done unto me.” She seeks our complete surrender to God.

And until we do completely surrender, Our Lady’s question: Why do you not give me your hearts completely? will not go away.

Stop... for a moment

Dear children! You are running, working, gathering – but without blessing. You are not praying! Today I call you to stop in front of the manger and to meditate on Jesus, whom I give to you today also, to bless you and to help you to comprehend that, without him, you have no future. Therefore, little children, surrender your lives into the hands of Jesus, for him to lead you and protect you from every evil. Thank you for having responded to my call. December 25, 2008

If I present myself before Jesus, I stop running, I stop working and I stop gathering. Instead, I become still. To become still in the presence of Jesus is prayer. A moment in the presence of God is always prayer; and in that moment I allow myself to become blessed by God. To recognise that moment, a moment given to me by God, is a blessing. To understand that every moment in my life is a gift from God and to give that moment to God in some way is unceasing prayer and with unceasing prayer come unceasing blessings. My future can only be that present moment. But every moment can be everlasting if I live that moment in the presence of God. So Our Lady is asking me to surrender my life, that moment, into the hands of God, and in that moment God will protect me from all evil.

Solemnity of the Mother of God

Like the Churches of the East, Rome wished to honour the Virgin Mother of God during the days after Christmas. As a result the Anniversary of St Mary made its appearance on January 1 in the seventh century; it has accurately been called the first Marian feast of the Roman liturgy. — The Church at Prayer.

In one of the Medjugorje messages (October 12, 1981) Our Lady makes reference to her greatest title. When answering questions from the visionaries, she said, I am the Mother of God and the Queen of Peace.
